BBC journalist and scientology debunker John Sweeney recently claimed to have found a secret “alien space cathedral” built by the controversial cult of Scientology.

According to a report published by British newspaper the Sun on Monday, Sweeney allegedly found a gateway to a secret bunker that the Church of Scientology built to protect their teachings from a nuclear holocaust they thought would take place in the future. It is near the remote community of Mesa Huerfanita, New Mexico, north of Roswell, a town linked to numerous UFO sightings.

Sweeney said Scientologists believe that the markings near the bunker -- two huge overlapping circles with diamond shapes at their centers -- are to act as a guide for aliens and high-ranking scientologists seeking to return to Earth from space after the holocaust has wiped out humanity.

The cathedral is believed to have been built in the 1980s at a cost of millions of dollars. The stainless steel airlocks of the building protect a vault that contains the lectures of church founder L. Ron Hubbard, according to Sweeney’s report.

The journalist, quoting an ex-member of the cult, said that the organization collects thousands of dollars from its members.

“It strikes me that a church is not the right word for an organization that places gold in a vault under the ground. In English we call that a bank,” Sweeney said.

Scientology is a religious group that “offers a precise path leading to a complete and certain understanding of one’s true spiritual nature and one’s relationship to self, family, groups, Mankind, all life forms, the material universe, the spiritual universe and the Supreme Being,” according to its website.

One of its most well-known members, Tom Cruise, earlier this year divorced Katie Holmes, with his devotion to Scientology was cited as a possible reason.
