Global sales of long-term evolution (LTE) smartphones will likely triple next year, driven by South Korea‘s tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. and its U.S. rival Apple Inc., a report showed Sunday.

The report by research firm Strategy Analytics (SA) predicted that about 275 million units of LTE smartphones will be sold worldwide next year, which will be three times larger than this year’s annual sales estimate of 90.9 million units.

The report expected that the U.S., Britain, Japan, China and South Korea will play a major role in expanding the LTE smartphone market. In particular, it cited Samsung Electronics and Apple as handset makers that will lead the market expansion.

SA predicted that Samsung and Apple will continue to dominate the fourth-generation mobile phone market next year as they did in the third-generation market this year thanks to strong demand for their popular handset models, including the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5.

Currently, Samsung and Apple dominate the global LTE smartphone market. Another SA report showed that Samsung‘s market share stood at 40 percent during the third quarter, followed by Apple with 26.7 percent. South Korea’s LG Electronics came next with a 9.1 percent share. (Yonhap News)

내년도 LTE 스마트폰의 전세계 판매량이 올해의 3배로 크게 늘어날 것이라는 전망이 나왔다.

23일 시장조사기관 스트래티지애널리틱스(SA)의 보고서에 따르면 내년도 전세계 LTE 스마트폰의 판매량은 2억7천500만대에 달해 올해 판매량 추정치인 9천90만대보다 3배가량 많을 것으로 예상된다.

보고서는 "LTE는 모든 통신 사업자와 서비스 개발자, 기기 제조사가 무시하지 못할 고성장•고부가가치 시장이 되고 있다"며 "특히 내년은 4G(세대) LTE 기술에 있어서 기록적인 해가 될 것"이라고 예상했다.

보고서는 LTE의 확산을 이끌 국가로 미국, 영국, 일본, 중국과 함께 한국을 꼽았으며 새로 LTE를 도입하는 국가들도 LTE 확산의 한 축을 담당할 것이라고 내다봤다.

이어 LTE 확산을 선도할 제조사로 삼성전자와 애플, 노키아, 블랙베리, 화웨이, LG전자, 팬택을 주목하며 "올해의 3G 마켓과 마찬가지로 내년 4G 마켓도 삼성과 애플의 독주가 예상된다"고 밝혔다.

보고서는 "삼성전자의 갤럭시S3와 애플의 아이폰5가 가장 인기 있는 LTE폰이 될 것"이라며 "HTC나 블랙베리 같은 다른 경쟁자들은 따라가야할 길이 멀다"고 말했다.

현재 LTE 시장은 삼성전자와 애플이 양분하고 있다. SA의 다른 보고서에 따르면 삼성전자의 지난 3분기 LTE 판매량 점유율은 40.0%로 5분기 연속 1위를 차지하고 있다.

애플은 26.7%로 2위에 올랐으며 LG전자(9.1%), 모토로라(6.7%), 팬택(5.8%) 순이었다.

보고서는 LTE 시장의 확대로 아마존이나 모질라(Mozilla) 같은 새로운 제조사가 LTE 제조 시장에 진입할 수도 있을 것이라고 내다봤다.

보고서는 "LTE 스마트폰 시장의 부가가치가 높아져 LTE 시장의 파이를 노리는 새로운 시장 진입자가 등장할 것"이라며 "십수 개의 새로운 제품이 시장에 나올 준비를 하고 있지만 이 제품들이 자리를 잡으려면 가격이나 디자인, 서비스 등에서 기존 제품과 차별화에 성공해야 한다"고 조언했다.
