LEEDS, England (AP) ― Juan Mata tied the score two minutes into the second half and Chelsea went on to rout Leeds 5-1 Wednesday night for a berth in the semifinals of the English League Cup.
Luciano Becchio put the hosts ahead in the 37th minute at a rain-soaked Elland Road.
Coming off a loss to Brazil’s Corinthians in Sunday’s Club World Cup final in Japan, Chelsea then got goals from Branislav Ivanovic in the 64th, Victor Moses in the 66th, Eden Hazard in the 81st and Fernando Torres int he 84th.
Chelsea plays Swansea in the two-leg semifinals and Aston Villa meets fourth-tier Bradford. The games are the weeks of Jan. 7 and 21.
Germany
Mario Goetze scored his first professional hat trick to lead defending champion Borussia Dortmund over Hannover 5-1 and into a German Cup quarterfinal at Bayern Munich.
Jakub Blaszczykowski and Robert Lewandowski also scored for Dortmund.
Mame Biram Diouf got visiting Hannover’s goal in the 79th minute. American defender Steve Cherundolo started for the visitors, got a yellow card and came off in the 67th.
In another third-round game, Stuttgart defeated second-division Cologne 2-1 on Christian Gentner’s 31st-minute goal and Vedad Ibisevic’s 36th-minute penalty kick. Stuttgart will next host Bochum, which beat second-division rival 1860 Munich 3-0.
Bas Dost scored in the 90th minute as Wolfsburg came from behind to beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 and earn a quarterfinal against third-division Kickers Offenbach.
Italy
Defending champion Napoli was eliminated from the Italian Cup with a 2-1 loss at home to Bologna in the fifth round.
Panagiotis Kone scored in the first minute of second-half stoppage time. Edinson Cavani put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute and Cristian Pasquato tied it in the 38th.
Kone also scored Sunday as Bologna upset Napoli 3-2 in the league.
After Cavani scored, he and coach Walter Mazzarri held up a Napoli shirt with the words “Cannavaro and Grava” written on it, in support of captain Paolo Cannavaro and defender Gianluca Grava, who were each banned for six months on Tuesday for failing to report match-fixing.
