SEOUL, Dec. 18 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean pastor has been released on bail after spending more than five months at a detention center in eastern China for allegedly helping North Korean defectors there, a Seoul official said Tuesday.

   The 51-year-old pastor, Jeon Jae-gwi, was arrested by Chinese authorities on July 9 at an airport in Harbin on charges of sheltering five North Korean defectors and has been held at the detention center in Yantai of northeastern Shandong Province.

   "To my knowledge, Pastor Jeon was released on bail on Dec. 14," the senior foreign ministry official said on the condition of anonymity.

   Chinese prosecutors have yet to press charges against Jeon. If he is indicted, he will face trial without being physically detained, according to the official.

   Tens of thousands of North Korean defectors are believed to be hiding in China, hoping to travel to Thailand or other Southeast Asian countries before resettling in South Korea, home to more than 24,000 North Korean defectors.

   North Korean defectors face harsh punishments and even execution after being repatriated from China, which does not recognize them as asylum-seekers.

中 억류 전재귀 목사 보석 허가받아

탈북자를 도와준 혐의로 중국 당국에 체포된 전재귀(51) 목사가 최근 보석으로 풀려나 불구속 상태에서 검찰 조사를 받게 됐다.

정부 당국자는 18일 "전 목사가 지난 14일 보석 허가를 받아 구치소에서 풀려난 것으로 안다"고 말했다.

전 목사는 탈북자 5명에게 숙소를 제공하다가 7월 9일 탈북자 밀입국 알선죄로 하얼빈(哈爾濱) 공항에서 체포된 뒤 그동안 산둥(山東)성 옌타이(煙臺)에서 구속 상태로 조사를 받아왔다.

중국 검찰은 아직 전 목사를 기소하지는 않았으며 전 목사는 기소될 경우 불구속 상태에서 법원의 재판을 받게 된다.

전 목사는 김영환씨 고문 의혹 이후 우리 정부가 올 여름 실시한 해외수감자 실태조사에서 "압송되는 과정에서 휴대전화 충전기로 머리를 맞았으며 두 차례 목 졸림을 당하기도 했다"고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.

전 목사는 일단 불구속 상태가 됐지만 재판을 앞두고 있는 만큼 언제 귀국할지는 불투명한 상태다.

한 소식통은 "중국 정부가 보석허가를 내준 것은 좋은 신호"라면서 "이로 미뤄 중국 정부가 처벌하더라도 그에게 중형을 선고하지는 않을 가능성이 있다"고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
