A U.S. judge jailed a computer hacker for 10 years on Monday for breaking into the email accounts of stars, including Scarlett Johansson, naked pictures of whom were leaked online.

A federal judge in Los Angeles also ordered 36-year-old Christopher Chaney, from Florida, to pay a total of $76,000 to Johansson, Christina Aguilera and Renee Olstead, who were among dozens of other people he hacked.

Chaney pleaded guilty in March, in a deal with prosecutors. He could have been jailed for up to 121 years if convicted on all 26 indictments he was originally charged with.

U.S. District Court Judge S. James Otero, said Chaney's conduct demonstrated a "callous disregard to the victims," notably for two non-celebrity targets whom he stalked for more than 10 years.

"Illegal wiretapping gave Mr. Chaney access to every email sent to more than four dozen victims, and allowed him to view their most personal information," said U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr.

"Mr. Chaney is responsible for causing dozens of illegally obtained, private photographs to be posted on the Internet, where they were available for all to see."

He added: "This case is a sobering reminder that cybercrime poses a very real threat to every American, and everyone should take steps to safeguard their identities and personal information on the Internet."

His arrest by FBI agents in October last year grew out of an 11-month investigation into the hacking of over 50 entertainment industry names, many of them young female stars like Mila Kunis.

The indictments against him included accessing and damaging computers, wire tapping and identify theft. (AFP)

만약 체이니가 받고 있는 26건의 혐의가 모두 유죄가 되었을 경우 총 징역 121년형을 받을 가능성도 있었다. 체이니는 해킹 외에도 지난 10년간 두 명의 일반인을 스토킹한 혐의를 받고 있다.

지방 법원의 S. 제임스 오테로 판관은 체이니의 범행이 피해자들의 권리를 전혀 고려하지 않았다고 비난했다.

“체이니는 불법적인 도청 등으로 48명 이상에 달하는 피해자들의 이메일을 모두 읽을 수 있었으며, 피해자들의 지극히 개인적인 정보를 볼 수 있었습니다”라고 사건을 담당한 안드레 비로테 2세 검사는 말했다.

“체이니는 이렇게 불법적으로 얻은 사적인 사진을 인터넷에 올려 모든 사람들이 볼 수 있도록 한 것에 대한 책임이 있습니다”라고 그는 덧붙였다.

비로테 검사는 이번 사건이 사이버범죄의 위험성에 대해 잘 보여준다면서 자신의 개인정보와 신상을 인터넷에서 다룰 때는 각별한 주의가 필요하다고 말했다.

미국 연방 수사국 (FBI)은 연예계 인사 50여명의 해킹 피해건을 11개월에 걸쳐 조사하여 작년에 체이니를 체포하는데 성공했다.
