South Korean outfielder Choo Shin-soo of the Cleveland Indians in Major League Baseball (MLB) has been traded to the Cincinnati Reds, the teams said Wednesday, Korean time.

The Indians dealt Choo and infielder Jason Donald to the Reds as part of a three-team, nine-player trade that also involved the Arizona Diamondbacks. In exchange, the Reds sent center fielder Drew Stubbs and shortstop Didi Gregorius to Cleveland.

The Indians then shipped Gregorius, pitcher Tony Sipp and first baseman Lars Anderson to the Diamondbacks for pitchers Trevor Bauer, Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw.

Choo, 30, had been subject to trade rumors all winter. He becomes a free agent after next season, and the Indians, rather than risk losing him for nothing to free agency, had been seeking to trade him in exchange for players.

The deal ends Choo's seven-season stint with the Indians, a team he joined in a midseason trade from the Seattle Mariners in 2006. He debuted with the Mariners in 2005 but toiled mostly in the organization's minors before blossoming as a full-time major league outfielder in Cleveland.

Choo enjoyed his best seasons with the Indians in 2009 and 2010, putting together back-to-back "20-20" seasons with at least 20 home runs and 20 steals. He also batted .300 in each of those two seasons.

After an injury-plagued 2011 season limited him to just 85 games and eight homers, Choo bounced back in 2012 with 16 home runs, 67 RBIs, 21 steals and a .283 batting average in 155 games.

Choo, who batted mostly third in the lineup in recent seasons, appeared as the leadoff man in 99 games this year. At the top of the order, Choo had 12 homers and 13 steals along with a .310 batting average and a .389 on-base percentage, higher than his season on-base percentage of .373.

After the end of this season, Choo told South Korean media that he would like to play on a "winning ball club." The Indians have not been to the playoffs since 2007 and finished fourth among five teams in the American League Central Division this year.

The Reds, on the other hand, took the National League Central Division title with a 97-65 record, before losing to the eventual World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants, in the playoffs.

They also made the postseason in 2010.

The Reds have been looking for a leadoff hitter, and Choo may fit the bill, bringing some gap power and speed at the top of the lineup. Cincinnati has plenty of power in the heart of the order, with the 2010 NL MVP Joey Votto, and All-Stars Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips.

Choo will likely take over as center fielder in Stubbs'

absence. Choo has mostly played in right field and has played only 10 games in center for Cleveland, none since 2009.

The Reds said they're glad to have Choo, even though the move came at a cost.

"It was very difficult giving up home-grown talent, but we think Choo can fill the missing parts in our lineup both offensively and defensively," Reds' general manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement. "He is an exciting player, and we expect him to set the table."

Chris Antonetti, the Indians' general manager, told MLB.com that once the teams settled on the terms of their trades, he spoke to Choo at length about his years in Cleveland.

 "I expressed my profound appreciation not only for his ability as a player, but for the person that he is and the teammate that he was," Antonetti said. "He's a guy that we will certainly miss -- not only for his on-field contributions, but everything else that he's meant to the organization."

Choo, who made US$4.9 million in 2012, will now play in the National League for the first time in his career. He could also face fellow South Korean pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin, who recently signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in NL West.

According to the 2013 schedule, the Reds and the Dodgers will play each other seven times. The Reds will travel to Los Angeles from July 25 to 28, and from Sept. 6 to 8, they will host the Dodgers for three games.

In interleague play next year, the Dodgers will not face the Indians and other AL Central teams.

The last pitcher-batter duel between South Koreans in the majors came on July 29, 2010 in Cleveland, between Choo of the Indians and the pitcher Park Chan-ho of the New York Yankees. Choo went down swinging against the recently-retired right-hander. (Yonhap News)

추신수, MLB 신시내티로 전격 트레이드!

미국프로야구 클리블랜드 인디언스의 주포 추신 수(30)가 신시내티 레즈로 이적했다.

CBS 스포츠 칼럼니스트 존 헤이먼과 포털사이트 야후 칼럼니스트 제프 파산은 클리블랜드, 신시내티, 애리조나 다이아몬드백스 세 팀이 추신수를 포함한 삼각 트레이드를 단행했다고 12일 트위터로 긴급 타전했다.

추신수는 신시내티와 1년 계약한 것으로 알려졌다.

클리블랜드는 먼저 추신수•내야수 제이슨 도널드와 현금을 얹어 신시내티로 보내는 대신 외야수 드루 스텁스와 유격수 디디 그레고리우스를 데려왔다.

이후 그레고리우스, 구원투수 토니 십, 1루수 라스 앤더슨을 애리조나로 보내고 우완 트레버 바우어•맷 앨버스•브라이언 쇼를 받는 3:3 트레이드에 합의했다.

무려 9명이 엮인 복잡한 트레이드다.

중견수 겸 톱타자감으로 추신수를 점찍은 신시내티와 추신수를 시장에 내놓고 투수를 원한 클리블랜드의 이해가 맞아떨어져 현지 시간 오후 8시 전격 트레이드가 이뤄졌다.

추신수•류현진의 에이전트인 스콧 보라스는 류현진과 다저스의 입단 계약을 성 공적으로 마무리한 뒤 곧바로 추신수의 트레이드도 해결했다.

2005년 시애틀 매리너스에서 빅리그에 데뷔해 2006년 클리블랜드로 이적한 추신수는 이로써 세 번째로 유니폼을 갈아입는다.

줄곧 아메리칸리그에서 뛰어온 그는 내년 내셔널리그에 데뷔한다.

클래블랜드는 추신수에게 장기 계약을 타진했으나 거절당한 뒤 그를 트레이드하겠다고 공개 선언했다.

내년 시즌이 끝난 뒤 자유계약선수(FA) 자격을 얻는 추신수에게 거액을 지불할 형편이 못되는 클리블랜드가 투수를 얻기 위해 택한 고육책이었다.

공격, 수비, 주루 삼박자를 갖춘 추신수는 2008년부터 클리블랜드의 중심 타자로 자리잡았다.

빠른 발과 강한 어깨, 장타력, 정확성, 파워 등을 겸비한 5툴 선수로 이름을 날렸고 올해까지 통산 타율 0.289, 83홈런, 373타점, 85도루를 기록했다.

2009~2010년 2년 연속 20홈런-20도루를 달성하고 아메리칸리그 정상급 외야수로 성장했다.

주로 3번 타자로 나섰던 추신수는 올해 5월 중순부터 1번 타자로 출전해 타격 센스를 뽐내며 톱타자로 성공적으로 변신했다.

이런 모습이 타선의 선봉에 설 적임자를 찾던 신시내티의 입맛을 충족시킨 것으 로 보인다.

새로 이적할 팀으로 포스트시즌에 올라갈 수 있는 빅마켓 구단을 선호한 추신수에게 신시내티는 크게 매력적인 구단은 아니다.

신시내티의 올해 연봉 총액은 8천220만 달러로 클리블랜드(7천843만 달러) 보다 많지만 전체 30개 구단 중 17위일 정도로 풍족한 편은 아니다.

그러나 '명장' 더스티 베이커 감독의 지도력을 앞세워 올해 지구 1위로 포스트시즌에 진출했을 정도로 조직력이 좋아 내년 추신수가 생애 처음으로 가을 잔치 무대를 밟을 가능성은 크다. 

한편 추신수의 이적 소식을 접한 레즈 팬들은 '신시내티 킬러'가 왔다며 기대감을 나타냈다.

추신수는 올해 신시내티와의 인터리그 경기에서 타율 0.407(27타수11안타)을 터 뜨리며 펄펄 날았다. 11안타 중 8개가 2루타 이상의 장타였다.

레즈를 상대로 통산 타율 0.351, 홈런 7개, 16타점을 올리며 강한 모습을 보였다.
