North Korea announced Wednesday its long-range rocket launch was a success, saying what it claims is a scientific satellite has entered orbit.

"The second version of satellite Kwangmyongsong-3 successfully lifted off from the Sohae Space Center by carrier rocket Unha-3 on Wednesday," the official Korean Central News Agency said. "The satellite entered its preset orbit."

North Korea launched the three-stage rocket at 9:51 a.m., with its first stage falling in the Yellow Sea, and what appears to be its second stage landing in waters near the Philippines, according to South Korean officials.

The communist nation has long claimed that it has the right to peaceful use of outer space and the rocket launch was aimed at sending off a scientific satellite.

But South Korea, the United States, China and other countries have denounced the planned launch as a disguised ballistic missile test and a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban Pyongyang from any ballistic activity because it can be used to develop missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons. (Yonhap News)

北 "광명성 3호 위성발사 성공…예정 궤도 진입"

발사 후 1시간30분 만에 신속 발표

북한이 12일 장거리 로켓을 성공적으로  발사했 다고 발표했다.

조선중앙통신은 이날 오전 11시23분 "평안북도 철산군 서해위성발사장에서 운반 로케트 `은하 3호'를 통한 `광명성 3호' 2호기 위성의 발사가 성공했다"며 "위성은 예정된 궤도에 진입했다"고 밝혔다.

조선중앙방송과 평양방송도 이날 오전 11시20분 장거리 로켓을 성공적으로 발사 했다고 전했다.

북한이 장거리 로켓의 발사를 발표한 것은 이날 오전 9시51분께 평안북도  철산 군 동창리의 로켓 발사장에서 `은하 3호'를 발사한 지 1시간 30분 만이다.

이는 지난 4월13일과 2009년 4월5일 장거리 로켓을 각각 쏜 뒤 4시간여 만에 발사 사실을 밝힌 것보다 훨씬 신속히 이뤄진 것이다.

북한은 또 그동안 대내용 매체에서는 로켓 발사에 관한 내용을 일절 전하지  않 다가 조선중앙방송을 통해 주민들에게 처음으로 알렸다.
