South Korea and the United States have agreed to step up cooperation on shale gas, an increasingly popular source of energy, a visiting top Seoul official said Friday.

"In a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu yesterday, I had a lot of discussions on cooperation in the shale gas sector," South Korean Knowledge Economy Minister Hong Suk-woo told reporters. His ministry handles trade, energy and industry affairs. He is on a trip here for the U.S.-Korea Investment and Trade Cooperation Forum.

"Since shale gas is one of big pillars of the U.S. economy, U.S. firms are hoping for South Korea's investment," Hong added. Shale gas refers to natural gas produced from the fine-grained sedimentary rock of shale.

It is gaining popularity worldwide due to relatively low prices and carbon emissions. South Korea plans to import North American shale gas starting in 2017. The minister emphasized the South Korea-U.S. free trade agreement (FTA) has opened a new chapter in bilateral trade relations.

"So far, trade relations between South Korea and the United States have focused on trade," he said. "We organized this event to expand investment ties." Friday's investment forum came as part of efforts to ride on the FTA that went into effect in March.

Other participants included Wendy Cutler, assistant U.S. trade representative for Japan, Korea and APEC, Sohn Kyung-shik, chairman

and CEO of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and his American counterpart, Thomas J. Donohue.

On the sidelines of the forum, business leaders from the two nations discussed possible investment opportunities. It produced $160 million worth of tentative deals, officials said. (Yonhap News)

한ㆍ미, 셰일가스 투자ㆍ협력 강화 합의

홍석우 "전력수급난 내년 하반기 해소"

홍석우 지식경제부 장관은 7일(현지시간) "미국 정부와 새로운 천연가스로 주목받는 셰일가스 관련 협력을 강화하기로 했다"고 밝혔다.

한ㆍ미 투자협력포럼 참석차 미국을 방문 중인 홍 장관은 이날 워싱턴DC에서 특파원들과 만나 "어제 스티븐 추 미국 에너지부 장관과 만나 셰일가스 부분 협력에 대해 많은 얘기를 나눴다"면서 이같이 전했다.

그는 특히 "셰일가스는 미국 경제를 흔드는 큰 축 가운데 하나이기 때문에 미국기업들도 우리의 투자를 바라고 있다"고 설명했다.

셰일가스는 탄화수소가 풍부한 근원암에서 생산되는 천연가스이다.  이산화탄소배출량이 적은데다 저렴해  각광을 받고 있다. 우리나라는 오는 2017년부터 북미산 셰일가스를 들여올 예정이다.

지경부 관계자는 "앞으로 미국에 대한 투자 기회는 셰일가스 부문이 주도할 것 으로 보인다"면서 "워낙 많이 개발되고 있기 때문에 미국 내 자본 외에도 투자 기회가 많을 것"이라고 설명했다.

홍 장관은 이어 최근 전력 수급 관리 능력 부재와 관련한 비판에 대해  내년 하반기 이후에는 전력 공급이 상당히 개선될 것이라고 말했다.

그는 "전력 공급난이 벌어지는 것은 1차적으로 정부에 책임이 있다"면서 "과거수요 예측이 낙관적이었고  공급도 건설지연 등으로 인해 예상보다 적었다"고  지적했다.

그러면서 "내년에 700만~1천만㎾ 규모의 추가 공급이 이뤄지기 때문에 내년 여름 이후에는 당분간 큰 어려움은 없을 것"이라고 강조했다.

이밖에 홍 장관은 전기요금에 대해 "인상하면 전기 수요를 줄이는 효과는 분명히 있지만 서민경제의 어려움과 기업경제 등을 고민하지 않을 수 없기 때문에 이를 잘 비교해서 잘 판단하겠다"고 덧붙였다.
