U.S. teens and adults ages 13-24 represent more than a quarter of new HIV infections each year, but 6-in-10 are unaware they are infected, officials say.

A Vital Signs report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta said an estimated 12,200 new HIV infections occurred in 2010 among young people ages 13-24 -- 72 percent of estimated new HIV infections in young people occurred in young men who have sex with men and 57 percent were African-Americans.

“That so many young people become infected with HIV each year is a preventable tragedy,” Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, director of the CDC, said in a statement. “All young people can protect their health, avoid contracting and transmitting the virus, and learn their HIV status.”

Despite recommendations from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics, which call for routine HIV testing of youth in medical settings, the analysis showed 35 percent of those ages 18-24 were tested for HIV, while only 13 percent of high school students and 22 percent of sexually experienced students were ever tested, Frieden said.

Partially as a result of lower testing levels, HIV-infected people age 25 and under were significantly less likely than those older to get and stay in HIV care and to have their virus controlled at a level that helps them stay healthy and reduce their risk of transmitting HIV to partners, the report said. 젊은 에이즈환자 60%, 감염사실 모른다!

13세에서 24세 사이의 미국 젊은층은 매년 신규 에이즈 감염자의 4분의 1이상을 차지하지만 그 가운데 60퍼센트 이상이 그 사실을 인지하지 못한다는 조사결과가 나왔다.

미국 질병통제예방센터 애틀란타 지부가 발표한 활력징후 보고서(Vital Signs report)에 따르면 지난 2010년 기준 13-24세 연령대에서 12,200명의 새로운 에이즈 감염자가 발생했는데 이 가운데 72퍼센트가 남자 동성연애자들이었으며 57퍼센트는 아프리카계 미국인인 것으로 나타났다.

질병통제예방센터의 토마스 프리덴 박사는 성명발표에서 “너무도 많은 젊은이들이 충분히 예방할 수 있음에도 에이즈에 매년 감염되곤 한다”고 말했다.

미국 질병통제예방센터와 소아과협회에서 여러 예방책과 검진의 필요성을 말하고 있지만 18세에서 24세 사이의 젊은 사람들 가운데 35퍼센트만이 에이즈 검사에 참여하고 있으며 고등학생 가운데서는 13퍼센트, 성 경험이 잇는 학생들의 22퍼센트만이 이러한 검사에 적극적으로 참여하고 있다고 박사는 밝혔다.

이러한 부진한 검사참여도와 유사한 결과로, 미국 25세 이하의 에이즈 감염자들은 그 이상 연령대의 감염자들에 비해 에이즈 치료에 전력을 다하는 비율 또한 매우 낮게 나타나 바이러스를 이전시킬 가능성이 더 높게 나타난다고 박사는 덧붙였다. (코리아헤럴드)
