A Florida man who died after wolfing down worms and cockroaches to win a contest choked to death, autopsy results released Monday showed.

Broward County Medical Examiner Craig Mallak said the death of Edward Archbold, 32, of West Palm Beach, was an accident, The Miami Herald reported.

Mallak said Archbold‘s airway was clogged with “arthropod body parts” and he died of asphyxia. The autopsy ruled out toxic substances as the cause of death, the newspaper said.

Authorities had said previously Archbold had eaten dozens of cockroaches and worms to win an Oct. 5 contest at a Deerfield Beach pet shop. The prize was a female Ivory Ball python valued at $850 the father of two had wanted to give to a friend, the Herald reported earlier.

No other contestants experienced any symptoms, the newspaper said. (UPI)

미국 플로리다의 ‘벌레먹기대회’에서 한 남성이 갑자기 사망한 원인이 질식으로 인한 것이었다는 부검결과가 월요일 발표됐다.

플로리다 브로워드 카운티 검시관 크레이그 말라크는 피해자 에드워드 아치볼드(32)의 사망은 사고로 인한 것이었다고 현지 언론 마이애미 헤럴드를 통해 밝렸다.

검시관 말라크는 아치볼드의 기도가 ‘절지동물의 일부’로 인해 막혔고 결국 피해자는 질식사게 됐다고 말했다. 이번 부검에서는 독성물질에 의한 사망 가능성은 배제한 것으로 언론은 보도했다.

당국에서는 이전에도 피해자 아치볼드가 수십마리의 바퀴벌레와 지렁이를 먹어 지난 10월 5일 열린 디어필드 비치 애완동물점 벌레먹기대회에서 승리한 바 있다고 밝혔다. 당시 부상으로 주어진 것은 약 850달러 상당의 암컷 비단뱀이었던 것으로 알려졌다.
