A South Pacific island identified on Google Earth and world maps does not exist, according to Australian scientists who went searching for the mystery landmass during a geological expedition.

The sizeable phantom island in the Coral Sea is shown as Sandy Island on Google Earth and Google maps, supposedly midway between Australia and the French-governed New Caledonia.

The Times Atlas of the World appears to identify it as Sable Island and according to Dr. Maria Seton the weather maps used by the Southern Surveyor, an Australian maritime research vessel, also say it is there.

But when the Southern Surveyor, which was tasked with identifying fragments of the Australian continental crust submerged in the Coral Sea, steamed to where it was supposed to be, it was nowhere to be found.

“We wanted to check it out because the navigation charts on board the ship showed a water depth of 1,400 meters in that area -- very deep,” Seton, from the University of Sydney, told AFP after the 25-day voyage.

“It‘s on Google Earth and other maps so we went to check and there was no island. We’re really puzzled. It‘s quite bizarre.

”How did it find its way onto the maps? We just don’t know, but we plan to follow up and find out.“ (AFP)

남태평양 ‘미스터리 섬’이 사라졌다?

한 호주 연구진이 지질탐사 과정에서 구글의 지도 서비스 ‘구글어스’에 표시된 한 남태평양의 섬이 실재하지 않는다는 사실을 밝혀냈다.

호주 북동부의 산호해(Coral Sea)에 위치한 것으로 구글어스 지도에 ‘샌디 아일랜드(Sand Island)’로 표시되어 있던 상당한 크기의 이 섬은 호주 본토와 프랑스령인 뉴칼레도니아 사이에 있는 것으로 추정되어 왔다.

이 섬은 타임지 세계지도에는 ‘세이블 아일랜드(Sable Island)’로 표기되어 있으며 마리아 세튼 박사 휘하의호주 해양 연구탐사선 서던 서베이어(Southern Surveyor)호에 탑재된 날씨지도에서도 이 섬이 존재한다고 표시해왔다.

그러나 서던 서베이어호가 산호해 해저의 호주 대륙붕의 조각을 확인하기 위해 탐사를 하던 중 이 섬이 실재하지 않는 다는 것을 발견하게 된 것이다.

시드니 대학 소속의 세튼 박사는 25일간의 탐사항해 끝에 AFP에 “구글어스와 다른 기타 지도에서 이 섬이 있다고 표시되어 있어서 그 곳으로 가보았지만 아무것도 없었다. 우리는 몹시 당혹스러웠다. (실재하지 않는 섬이) 지도에 어떻게 등재된 것인지 알 수 없다. 지금으로서는 계속해서 조사를 해 볼 계획이다.”고 밝혔다. (코리아헤럴드)
