Tolkien’s grandson says film deeply hurt his family

The grandson of “Lord of the Rings” author J.R.R. Tolkien told the media that the great success of the film adaptations caused serious problems for both to his family and himself.
Barrister-turned-novelist Simon Tolkien confessed that the film’s success, which grossed about $3 billion worldwide, made him feel “suffocated” at that time because his family could barely prepare for the massive attention following the release of the movie.
Despite opposition of the rest of the family, his father Christoper Tolkien cooperated with director Peter Jackson to make the novel into a film. The discord caused an “incredibly, dreadfully painful” family feud, said the 53-year-old novelist.
Simon also said that he was scared of being a novelist at first because the shadow of his grandfather was so immense.
“All I was ever going to be was the grandson of a very famous writer. That was the sum total of my achievements,” he said during an interview with the Telegraph.
But he also said that he now came to peace with the legacy of his grandfather and is trying to see it as a benefit, not an obstacle.
