North Korea has been stepping up its efforts to idolize leader Kim Jong-un, recent documents show, in an apparent indication that Kim's grip on the communist state has grown tighter.

According to the Chosun Sinbo, a pro-North Korean newspaper in Japan, on Sunday, the ruling Workers' Party in Pyongyang has published a book extolling the extraordinary skills of the young leader.

The paper reported that the book describes Kim as a worldly man who is well-versed in international politics and military affairs, and writes that he was a child prodigy able to fire guns and drive at a young age.

The Chosun Sinbo said it was the first volume of what is expected to be a collection of similarly sycophantic books about Kim. Kim Il-sung, his grandfather and the founding leader of the North, had 100 such volumes, while Kim Jong-il, Jong-un's late father, had 70 similar tomes written about him.

In January of this year, the North's Korean Central Broadcasting Station aired a documentary featuring Kim Jong-un, believed to be in his late 20s, in which it claimed the new leader was a diligent student in college and completed his graduation thesis on the accomplishments of Kim Il-sung.

South Korean media covering North Korean affairs have also said badges bearing Kim Jong-un's image have been handed out to senior government officials.

Daily NK, a Seoul-based news site reporting on the North, quoted a source as saying Kim has given such badges to senior intelligence officials "to instill loyalty."

Commemorative stamps with Kim's portrait were issued in August, leading to speculation that badges would soon follow. It is considered an obligation for North Korean officials to wear badges showing their leader.

The Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the ruling party, recently began to run a new banner slogan in its top right-hand corner calling on people to rally around Kim Jong-un as their great leader. Previously, a generic message urging people to unite to achieve their socialist goals had been printed.

Experts believe intensifying efforts to idolize Kim are an indication that the father-son transfer of power has taken place smoothly.

These steps, experts added, may also be designed to finalize the transition period that began with the passing of Kim Jong-il last December. (Yonhap News)

김정은 북한 국방위원회 제1위원장에 대한 북한당국의 우상화 작업이 최근 들어 본격화 단계에 돌입한 것으로 보인다.

북한이 김 제1위원장에 대한 첫 `우상화 도서'를 발간한 데다 `김정은 배지'도 제작해 간부들에게 배포하고 있다는 관측이 나오고 있기 때문이다.

18일 재일조선인총연합회 기관지 조선신보 등에 따르면 조선노동당출판사는 최 근 김 제1위원장의 비범성을 부각하는 회상실기도서 `선군혁명영도를 이어가시며' 제1권을 발간했다.

회상실기도서는 주민들이 영도자의 각종 활동을 회상한 내용을 수록한 시리즈 물로, 김일성 주석의 경우 `인민들 속으로(총 100권)', 김정일 국방위원장은  `주체 시대를 빛내이시며(총 70권)' 등이 있다.

이 책들은 `김일성 회고록', `김일성 저작집', `김정일 선집' 등과 함께 북한의 당•행정 간부들이 반드시 갖추고 있어야 할 도서로 알려졌다.

조선중앙TV 등은 지난 1월 공개한 김 제1위원장 기록영화에서 그가 16살 때 김일성 주석의 업적을 다룬 논문을 "대작으로 완성한" 사상이론의 천재이며, 김일성군사종합대학 재학 때에는 매일 3∼4시간만 자면서 공부했다고 찬양한 바 있다.

북한은 과거 김일성 주석과 김정일 위원장에 대해서도 "동서고금의 그 어느 군사가도 따를 수 없는 출중한 군사의 영재", "인류가 낳은 가장 걸출한 군사전략가" 등의 수식어로 부자를 우상화한 바 있다.

대북 전문매체 사이에서는 북한이 `김정은 배지'를 배포하기 시작했다는 주장도 나온다.

대북매체 데일리NK는 소식통을 인용, "김정은이 보위기관의 충성심 고취를 목적으로 자신의 초상이 그려진 배지를 제작해 국가보위부 고위간부들에게 우선 배포했다"고 최근 보도했다.

지난 8월 북한이 김 제1위원장의 모습이 담긴 기념우표를 첫 발행하자 김일성• 김정일 배지에 이어 김정은 배지도 조만간 제작•배포할 것이라는 관측이 나왔다. 

북한에서 영도자 형상이 새겨진 배지를 다는 것은 일종의 의무다.

노동당 기관지 노동신문이 1면 최상단 우측에 `위대한 김정은 동지를 영도의 중 심, 단결의 중심으로 높이 받들어 모시자!'는 고정구호를 배치한 사실도 최근 확인됐다.

이전에는 주로 `전당, 전군, 전민이 일심단결해 사회주의 위업을 끝까지 완성하 자!'는 문구가 그 자리를 차지했었다.

김 제1위원장에 대한 우상화 작업이 속도를 내고 있다는 것은 결국 그의 권력장 악이 그만큼 순조롭게 이뤄지고 있다는 점을 반영한다는 분석이 나온다.

또 일각에서는 김정일 위원장 사망 1주기(12월17일), 김 제1위원장 최고사령관 등극 1주년(12월30일)이 다가오는 만큼 `과도체제'를 마무리 짓기 위한 수순이라는 분석도 나온다.
