A British boy has a bright smile on his face every day, but not by his will.

The two-year-old Elliot Eland was born with Angelman’s syndrome -- a neuro-genetic disorder characterized by intellectual and developmental disability -– that makes him laugh.

“When we feel down, Elliot’s laughter keeps us all going; you just have to look at him and his happiness takes over,” Elliot’s mother Gale said in an interview with British media.

“The only problem is if Elliot and his big brother, Alex, are playing and Alex accidently gets hurt. Alex will be crying, but Elliot just laughs and he doesn’t understand why. That can hurt as we don’t want Alex to think Elliot is happy about hurting him,” the mother added.

The syndrome is hard to diagnose when the patient is under age 12 and the treatment for the disorder unfounded.

Another symptom Elliot has is that he needs only a short period of sleep at night compared to other children.

“We would guess at the moment he has about four hours sleep. We’ll also need to make sure that his bedroom is safe when he’s unsupervised, so a soft floor and a low bed will be really important,” the mother said.

But 41-year-old mother Gale and her husband Craig, 34, said they see the child’s smiling as a happy side effect of an otherwise difficult condition.

“Sometimes I don’t even think it’s a result of the Angelman’s -- he doesn’t have a care in the world, so why wouldn’t he be happy?”

영국의 2살 배기 아이 엘리엇 이랜드(Elliot Eland)는 자신의 의지와는 상관없이 언제나 얼굴에 미소를 띠고 있다.

엘리엇이 앓고 있는 안젤만증후군(Angelman’s syndrome)은 희귀 신경 질환으로 지적ㆍ발달장애를 불러오며, 동시에 웃음이 끊이지 않는 병이다.

“우리가 울적할 때 엘리엇의 웃음으로 힘을 낼 수 있다. 아이를 바라보고 있으면 그 애의 행복이 전해진다”고 어머니 게일(Gale)이 한 영국 매체와의 인터뷰에서 말했다.

게일은 또 “한가지 문제점이라면 엘리엇이 형 알렉스와 놀다 다치게 되면 알렉스는 울지만 엘리엇은 그냥 웃는다는 것이다. 알렉스는 동생이 왜 웃는지 아직 이해하지 못한다. 엘리엇이 자신을 다치게 한 게 좋아서 웃는 것으로 오해해 상처받지 않기를 바랄 뿐이다”고 말했다.

안젤만증후군은 12세 미만의 환자에게 진단하기 어려운 병이며 치료법도 아직 발견되지 않았다.

엘리엇은 다른 아이들과 비교했을 때 짧은 수면 시간을 갖는 증상도 보이고 있다.

“아이가 한 4시간쯤 자는 것 같다. 우리는 아이의 침실이 안전한지 늘 확인해야 한다. 부드러운 바닥과 낮은 침대를 갖추는 것은 매우 중요하다”고 말했다.

엘리엇의 어머니 게일(41)과 아버지 크레이그(34)는 어려운 조건들 속에서도 좋은 측면을 보려고 노력하고 있다고 말했다.

“가끔은 (아이의 행동이) 안젤만증후군을 앓고 있기 때문이라는 생각조차 잊는다. 우리 아이는 세상에 신경 쓰지 않는다. 그러니 왜 행복하지 않을까?”
