Notorious serial killer “Jack the Ripper,” who terrorized the streets of London in 1888, was a surgeon from Essex called Stephen Herbert Appleford, claims a statistics professor in Uruguay.

In an essay called “Travelling through time to trap Jack the Ripper,” Professor Eduardo Cuitino at the University ORT in Montevideo said for the past two years he analyzed data related to Doctor Appleford and found clues linking the surgeon to the killer.

According to the profile provided by Cuitino, Appleford at the time of the crimes was a strong 36-year-old man with an IQ well above average. He claims both Appleford’s age and intellectual capacity are in line with traits found common in such type of criminals.

Cuitino said Appleford plunged into the life of crime in 1881 when his mother, to whom he was very close, passed away.

He claimed Appleford’s first attempt at murder took place a year later, when a woman was found stabbed in the back and the doctor was called upon to help her. Appleford filed a report saying the woman’s injury was self inflicted, but Cuitino said the he was actually the culprit.

Cuitino analyzed Apploford’s handwriting to find out that he was left-handed just like Jack the Ripper. He also used Google Maps to develop a “geometric theory” around crimes, which helped him reach his conclusion.

Cuitino finds Appleford’s death on Aug. 31, 1940 suspicious, as Jack the Ripper’s first crime happened on that very day in 1888. Also, Appleford was 88 years old when he died, a number which Cuitino thinks resembles the year 1888, when Jack the Ripper brutally murdered five prostitutes.

Cuitino suspected that Appleford killed himself in order to mock England.

Jack the Ripper is an unidentified murderer blamed for five murders that occurred in the East End of London from August to November 1888. Although many speculations arose concerning the identity of the assailant, none were perceived as persuasive.

퀴티노는 애플포드가 처음 범죄를 저지르기 시작한 계기는 그가 몹시 사랑했던 어머니가 별세한 것 때문이라고 추정했다.

어머니가 사망하고 1년 뒤, 애플포드는 여성이 흉기로 부상을 입은 사건에서 의사라는 이유로 도움을 요청받았다. 당시 그는 여성이 스스로의 과실로 부상을 입었다는 보고서를 작성했으나, 퀴티노는 이 사건이 애플포드의 살인미수였다고 주장했다.

또한 퀴티노는 애플포드의 필체를 분석해 그가 잭더리퍼와 동일하게 왼손잡이라는 사실을 밝혀냈다. 그 외에 그는 구글 맵을 통해 잭더리퍼가 저지른 범행 장소를 분석해서 두 사람이 동일인물이라는 결론을 내게 되었다고 밝혔다.

애플포드는 1940년 8월 31일에 사망했는데, 퀴티노는 이 점 역시 잭더리퍼와 관련되어 있다고 추정하고 있다. 8월 31일은 잭더리퍼가 처음으로 살인을 저지른 날짜이며, 애플포드가 사망할 당시의 나이인 88세는 1888년과 뒷부분의 숫자가 같기 때문이다.

퀴티노는 애플포드가 끝내 자신을 잡지 못한 영국을 비웃기 위해 이 특정한 날짜에 자살을 했다고 주장했다.

잭더리퍼는 1888년 8월부터 11월에 걸쳐 매춘부 5명을 잔인하게 살해한 것으로 추정되는 연쇄살인마로서, 영국 당국은 그를 잡기 위해 온갖 노력을 기울였으나 끝내 그의 정체조차 파악하지 못했다.
