Korean police’s hours-long search for a man who had been reported missing by his girlfriend ended after it was revealed that he had lied to her about being chased by a man to go drinking with his friends.

The 22-year-old, identified by his surname Shin, went drinking with five other friends in Seoul after finishing his part-time job on the night of Oct. 14.

The drinking continued until 2 a.m. the next day but he did not answer his girlfriend’s repeated calls. Instead, he sent her a text message saying he was being chased by a man carrying a knife in Sinchon.

Apparently worried, Shin’s girlfriend called the police. While scores of police officers went searching for him, Shin called his girlfriend and said he was being chased by not one but four men at around 4:40 a.m.

About half an hour later, the police found him at his home and inquired what happened.

Shin confessed that he actually had lied to his girlfriend.

The police booked him without detention for interfering with police business.

휴대전화에 여자친구한테서 온 수십통의 부재중 전화기록이 찍히자 변명거리가 마땅찮던 신씨는 '연희삼거리 근처인데 칼을 든 괴한이 계속 따라온다'는 내용의 거짓 문자메시지를 여자친구에게 보냈다. 

놀란 신씨의 여자친구는 15일 오전 2시20분께 경찰에 신고했고, 서대문경찰서 형사들은 관할 연희파출소 직원들과 함께 일대를 수색했지만 신씨를 찾을 수 없었다. 

신씨는 오전 4시40분께 여자친구에게 전화를 걸어 헐떡이는 목소리로 "괴한이 한 명이 아니라 네 명인 것 같다. 연희삼거리 주택가 골목"이라고 말한 뒤 끊었다.

경찰은 30여분 뒤 신씨를 그의 자취방에서 발견해 자초지종을 캐물었다.
신씨의 행적을 수상히 여긴 경찰은 그의 휴대전화에 112 신고내역이 없는데다 '잘 들어갔어'라는 동료의 안부 문자 메시지를 찍힌 것을 발견해 추궁했고, 신씨는 거짓말을 했다고 실토할 수밖에 없었다.

서울 서대문경찰서는 24일 거짓말로 경찰의 공무를 방해한 혐의로 신씨를 불구속 입건했다.
