Around 1,000 workers from Iran's Entekhab group staged a demonstration at the South Korean embassy in Tehran on Sunday after an acquisition deal with Daewoo Electronics went sour due to sanctions.

The demonstration by workers from the private Iranian company was aimed at retrieving a down payment of $70 million (53 million euros) Entekhab had paid in 2011 to Daewoo, company spokesman Hamid Ghaznavi told AFP.

In November 2010, Entekhab Industrial Group signed a contract sealing its acquisition of South Korea's Daewoo Electronics for $518 million (397 million euros), officials said at the time.

Daewoo Electronics, a former subsidiary of the now-defunct Daewoo Group, has been under a debt rescheduling program since 1999 when its parent company collapsed.

Entekhab's deal for the acquisition of the Daewoo Electronics came unstuck in September 2010 when Seoul, reportedly under pressure from Washington, slapped sanctions on the Islamic republic over its controversial nuclear program.

"When they told us that the deal will not go through due to the sanctions, we asked for a refund of our down payment," Ghaznavi said.

"But since 2011 they have been stalling and telling us that because of banking sanctions they are unable to pays us."

Ghaznavi said that a South Korean embassy official had told him on Sunday that he would relay their demands to the authorities in Seoul.

"We will come back again if our demand is not met, since the company's 4,000 workers are affected by the cancellation of this deal," he warned.

Entekhab is located in the central province of Isfahan and produces appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and televisions under the brand names Snowa and Haier.

As part of its unilateral punitive measures, South Korea has suspended the operations of Iran's Bank Mellat.

The United Nations, the European Union, the United States, and several other countries have imposed sanctions against Iran for its refusal to halt its uranium enrichment program, which world powers suspect is masking an atomic weapons drive despite repeated denials by Tehran. (AFP)

이란인 1천여명 테헤란 한국대사관 앞 시위

이란 기업 엔텍합그룹의 전•현직 직원 1천 여명이 21일(현지시간) 테헤란 한국대사관 앞에서 대우일렉트로닉스 인수 계약금을 돌려달라며 시위했다.

주이란 대사관 관계자는 이날 연합뉴스와 통화에서 "엔텍합그룹 직원과 해고 노 동자 등 1천여명이 대사관 앞에서 오전 10시 조금 넘어서 시위를 시작했다"면서 "시위는 평화적으로 진행됐으며 낮 12시가 조금 넘어 끝났다"고 밝혔다.

엔텍합 노동조합의 무함마드 위원장은 이날 대사관 관계자를 만나 대우일렉트로 닉스 인수 계약시 지불한 계약금(578억원)을 돌려달라는 요구 사항을 전달했다.

대사관 관계자는 "무함마드 위원장은 엔텍합 문제가 해결되지 않으면 앞으로 시위를 지속하는 것은 물론 한국상품 불매 운동도 벌일 수 있다고 경고했다"고 전했다.

엔텍합그룹 대변인 하미드 가즈나비는 AFP통신과 인터뷰에서 "대우일렉 인수 계 약시 지불한 계약금 7천만달러를 돌려받기 위한 시위"라고 말했다.

그는 "상대방은 금융제재 때문에 지불할 수 없다고 말한다"며 "우리 뜻이 받아들여질 때까지 시위를 계속할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

이와 관련 대사관 관계자는 "가즈나비 대변인이 말한 계약금 7천만달러는 선수지원금과 자문비 등을 포함한 액수일 것"이라면서 "계약금은 약 580억원 규모"라고 말했다.

엔텍합은 2010년 11월 대우일렉트로닉스를 5억1천800만달러에 인수하는 계약을 체결했지만 서방의 이란 제재로 투자자들이 투자를 꺼리면서 계약이 무산됐다.

당시 계약금 578억원만 납부한 엔텍합은 결국 나머지 대금을 마련하지 못해 6개월만에 계약이 파기됐고 현재 한국 법원에서 엔텍합이 제기한 계약금 반환 요구 소송이 진행 중이다.
