Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., South Korea’s leading power equipment maker, said Wednesday it has clinched a deal to build a wind farm on an island off the west coast of the country.

Under the deal with the Korea South-East Power Co., a unit of the state-run Korea Electric Power Corp., Doosan Heavy will build the wind farm in a thermal power plant complex on Yeongheung Island.

The wind farm, which will be able to generate up to 24 megawatts of electricity, will start commercial operations in July, 2013, Doosan Heavy said.

Doosan Heavy did not reveal the terms of the contract.

The South Korean government has been pushing to promote wind power generation as the global wind power market is expected to grow 20 to 30 percent annually to reach 150 trillion won in 2015.

Sine November last year, Doosan Heavy has secured deals to provide wind power turbines which can generate 72 megawatts of electricity. (Yonhap News)
