An undergraduate residence hall at Massachusetts' Harvard University is drawing criticism for an in-house social event dubbed "IncestFest."

Organizers said the idea behind "IncestFest" is to encourage students in the Kirkland House residence hall to hook up with other residents in the same building, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

"House life is incredibly close-knit, bordering on downright incestuous," the event's description in Harvard's student newspaper, The Crimson, reads.

However, critics said they object to the word "incest" in the party's title.

"I am not only objecting to the name 'IncestFest' because it is offensive and insensitive -- although, indeed, it is, and it saddens me that this is not immediately obvious. I am writing this because incest is notoriously invisible and leaves its victims burdened with shame and humiliation for the rest of their lives," student Samantha Berstler wrote in an opinion piece published in The Crimson. 대학 ‘근친상간 축제’, 비난 폭주!

미국 최고의 명문대 중 하나인 하버드의 학생 축제 중 하나가 이름 때문에 비난을 받고 있다고 뉴욕 데일리 뉴스가 5일 (현지시간) 보도했다.

하버드 기숙사 중 하나인 커크랜드 하우스가 주최하는 이 행사는 기숙사에서 같이 사는 학생들끼리 서로 친해지기 위한 캠퍼스 파티이다.

이 행사의 이름은 “인세스트페스트 (IncestFest)”인데, 주최측에서는 하버드 학생 신문인 크림슨에서 “기숙사 생활은 배타적(incestuous)이기까지 할 정도로 굉장히 긴밀하게 맺어진 인간관계”라고 행사의 의의를 설명했다.

문제는 incest란 단어가 근친상간을 뜻하는 단어라는 것. 그렇기 때문에 이 행사의 이름은 자칫하면 축제를 뜻하는 festival의 준말인 fest와 합쳐진 '근친상간 축제'라고 해석될 여지가 있다.

이로 인해 하버드 재학생들은 거세게 반발을 하고 있다.

사만다 베르슬러는 크림슨에 게재된 사설을 통해 축제의 이름은 “모욕적이고 몰이해한 것”이라면서 근친상간은 피해자들에게 평생 안고 가야 할 수치심을 안겨주는 것이라며 이러한 단어를 쓰는 것에 대해 주의해야 한다고 주장했다.

“인세스트페스트란 이름은 섹시하지도 않으며, 귀엽거나 기발하지도 않다”라고 그녀는 역설했다.
