Over 100 items of classified military information have been leaked in the last four years but most violators received only light punishments, a ruling party lawmaker said Friday.

According to a report submitted by the Defense Security Command (DSC) for a parliamentary audit, 126 items of military information classed as third-degree or higher were been leaked between January 2009 and July of this year.

Among them, 61 were classified as second-degree secrets, which include secret military operations and activities of spy investigation authorities, while 65 were lower-level secrets, said Rep. Kim Jin-tae of the Saenuri Party, who revealed the DSC report.

While 26 people were indicted on charges of leaking military secrets, 18 had their indictments or sentences suspended, the report said, noting only one soldier actually served a prison term.

“Frequent suspension of indictments or jail terms could bring concerns over security awareness in the military,” Kim said. “(The military) should strongly punish violators.” (Yonhap News)

4년간 군사 3급이상 기밀이 126건이 유출됐지만 처벌은 극히 미약한 것으로 나타났다.

국회 법사위 김진태(새누리당) 의원은 12일 기무사령부로부터 제출받은 자료를 분석한 결과 “지난 2009년부터 올해 7월까지 126건의 군사기밀이 유출됐고 올해 상반기에만 62건이 적발됐다”고 밝혔다.

유출된 기밀은 2급이 61건(48%), 3급이 65건(52%)이다.

그러나 군기밀 유출에 따른 처벌 현황을 보면 처분이 확정된 26명 중 기소유예와 집행유예, 선고유예 등으로 석방된 군인이 18명(69%)에 달했고, 징역을 산 군인은 1명에 불과했다.

김 의원은 “기소유예와 집행유예 등이 남발되고 있어 군내 보안의식 약화가 우려된다”면서 “강력한 처벌이 이뤄져야 한다”고 주장했다. (Yonhap News)
