For decades, Jimmy Savile was a fixture on British television _ an eccentric, aggressively jocular host of children's shows and a tireless charity fundraiser. When he died last year at 84 _ by then knighted as Sir Jimmy _ he drew tributes from Prince Charles and thousands of fans.

Now several women have come forward to claim “Sir Jimmy” was also a sexual predator who abused underage girls.

The allegations have set off ripples of shock _ but not of surprise. There had, colleagues said, long been rumors. The main question being asked now is: Why did no one do anything?

“Maybe it was just the fact that Jimmy knew everybody,” Esther Rantzen, a former BBC journalist and founder of the ChildLine child-protection charity, told Channel 4 news. “We made him into the Jimmy Savile who was untouchable, who nobody could criticize.”

Child protection advocates say the case fits a pattern seen in the response to the child-molesting Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and in the English town of Rochdale, where a gang of men groomed vulnerable young girls for sex. Authorities in both places have been criticized for failing to act on claims of abuse.

The allegations against Savile are made in a documentary, “Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile,” to be shown Wednesday on Britain's ITV channel.

The program alleges that Savile abused girls in his Rolls-Royce, in a mobile home and at BBC's television headquarters. It includes interviews with a woman who says Savile sexually assaulted her while she was a student at the Duncroft special-needs school near London, and with a former BBC staff member who says she saw the entertainer indecently assaulting a 14-year-old girl.

The BBC said it has asked its investigations unit to make direct contact with police to offer full support for any lines of inquiry into the “serious and disturbing” allegations made about Savile _ some of which it said relate to alleged activity on BBC premises in the 1960s and 1970s.

“We are horrified by allegations that anything of this sort could have happened at the BBC - or have been carried out by anyone working for the BBC,” it said in a statement. “They are allegations of a serious criminal nature which the police have the proper powers to investigate.”

Savile's family has condemned the vilification of a man who is not alive to defend himself.

“The guy hasn't been dead for a year yet and they're bringing these stories out,” said Savile's nephew Roger Foster. “It could affect his legacy, his charity work, everything. I'm very sad and disgusted.”

Mark Williams-Thomas, who made the documentary, insisted it was right “to tackle this highly sensitive subject and allow these women to have a voice _ a voice that for many was not heard whilst they were children.” (AP)

"유명 TV진행자, 어린 소녀들 성폭행!"

7일 영국 일간 인디펜던트와 가디언 등에 따르면 지난해 10월 84세로 숨진 유명 진행자 지미 새빌이 1970년대 방송국 안팎에서 어린 소녀들에게 일상적으로 성폭력을 행사했다는 주장이 쏟아져 나오고 있다.

최근 영국 지상파 채널 ITV가 새빌의 성폭행 의혹을 세부조명한 다큐멘터리를 방송한 지 일주일도 채 지나지 않아 40여명의 여성이 성폭력 사건의 피해자라며 경찰에 연락했다.

이들 중 한 여성은 16세 때 새빌이 자신을 호텔방으로 데려가 성폭행했고, 임신까지 시켰다고 폭로했다. 또 다른 여성 4명은 서리 카운티 스테인스의 여학교에 다닐 당시 학교에서 새빌에 의해 성추행당했다고 털어놨다.

ITV가 방송한 다큐멘터리에서는 새빌이 1970년대 BBC 방송국 분장실 안에서 록 가수 게리 글리터 및 다른 남자연예인과 함께 10대 소녀 2명에게 성폭력을 행사했다 는 주장도 제기됐다.

당시 현장이 있었다는 카린 워드 여사는 다큐멘터리에 출연, 14세 때 겪은 목격 담을 전하면서 자신 역시 그 자리에서 성추행을 당했다고 말했다.

또 새빌의 스태프들이 어린 소녀들을 분장실에 줄 세워 그를 만나게 했고, BBC의 한 전직 직원의 경우 새빌과 다른 연예인들을 위해 성폭행 대상이 될 소녀들을 구해오는 임무를 맡았다는 보도까지 나왔다.

새빌은 아동 성추행 혐의 등으로 다섯 차례 이상 경찰 수사를 받았으나 증거 불 충분을 이유로 기소되지 않았다.

이와 관련, BBC 고위간부들은 새빌의 성폭행 사실을 수개월 전 알았으나 이를 묵인하고 지난주까지 경찰에게 알리지 않은 것으로 드러났다.

인디펜던트에 따르면 BBC의 탐사보도 프로그램 '뉴스나이트'는 지난해 12월 새빌의 성폭행 의혹에 관한 내용을 방송할 예정이었다.

그러나 담당편집자인 피터 리폰은 새빌이 기소되지 않았다는 소식을 듣고는 기 자들의 반발에도 방송을 보류했고, BBC는 대신에 새빌 헌정 프로그램 세 편을 방영하기로 결정했다.

이에 따라 지금까지 새빌의 부적절한 행위를 전혀 알지 못했고 사내에서 어떠한 불만사항도 접수되지 않았다고 주장해온 BBC는 비난을 면치 못하게 됐다.

이런 가운데 BBC 라디오1의 전직 DJ가 1980년대 BBC에 만연했던 여성에 대한 위압적 문화를 폭로하면서 논란은 더욱 커지고 있다.

리즈 커쇼는 최근 라디오4에 출연, 1980년대 DJ로 일하던 당시 다른 진행자로부 터 지속적으로 성추행을 당했다고 주장했다.

커쇼는 당시 BBC 방송국 분위기가 '위압적'이었다면서 이러한 문화가 조직 내에 만연했다고 폭로했다.

또 새빌의 부적절한 행동은 BBC 내에서도 '공공연한 비밀'이었다고 말했다.

한편, 이번 일로 영국에서는 성범죄자들이 법의 심판을 교묘히 피해 활개를 치고 결국 성범죄 사건 증가로 이어지는 현실에 대한 우려가 커지고 있다고 인디펜던트는 전했다.
