An ESPN-owned football website raised doubts about Park Ji-sung’s leadership, saying that the Korean footballer is an “unlikely choice of captain” for Queens Park Rangers, which is struggling in the English Premier League.

The article titled “This year’s crisis club? First call for QPR” pointed out the problems QPR faced in the abysmal season under the helm of manager Mark Hughes. Among them was 32-year-old Park’s addition as the new captain.

“Park Ji-sung seems an unlikely choice of captain, unless you consider his club is owned by the proprietors of Air Asia,” John Brewin wrote on ESPN FC’s website. “Currently, he embodies a team lacking in leadership.”

Brewin also said that Park’s departure from Manchester United may prove the popular belief that “Manchester United rarely let go of those who might still be of use to them,” indicating that Park’s performance at his new team fell short of high expectations.

He also argued that energetic plays expected to be delivered by Park came instead from Park’s backup Adel Taarabt.

Park, who is among QPR’s highest-paid players, has yet to score this season.

주장 박지성, 언론으로부터 ‘폭풍비난’

ESPN FC가 잉글랜드 프로축구 프리미어리그 에서 단 1승도 올리지 못하는 퀸스파크레인저스(QPR)의 부진 원인을 지목하면서 팀 주장 박지성(31)에게 혹평을 내놨다.

ESPN은 2일(현지시간) “위기에 빠진 올해의 클럽, QPR이 1순위”라는 제목의 칼럼에서 “박지성은 주장으로서 가망이 없어 보인다”고 평가했다.

QPR의 구단주가 ‘에어 아시아’ 항공사의 소유주이기 때문에 아시아 선수를 주장으로 뽑았을 뿐이라는 평가도 덧붙였다.

칼럼은 “최근 박지성이 QPR을 리더십이 없는 팀으로 만들어내고 있다”며 “맨체스터 유나이티드는 쓸모 있는 선수를 좀처럼 다른 팀으로 내보내지 않는다는 사실을 박지성이 증명하고 있다”고 혹독하게 비꼬았다.

또 “QPR은 박지성에게서 활기찬 에너지를 기대했지만 박지성이 아닌 아델 타랍에게서 그런 에너지를 받을 수 있었다”고 썼다.

올 시즌 첫 경기부터 QPR의 주장 완장을 차고 모든 경기에서 선발 출장한 박지성은 아직까지 공격 포인트를 기록하지 못했다.

한편 ESPN의 칼럼은 “QPR은 지난여름, 새로운 선수를 12명이나 영입했지만 지난 시즌 QPR의 감독이었던 닐 워녹이 기록했던 성적보다 더 나쁘다”며 선수들 사이의 부조화를 부진의 주원인으로 꼽았다.
