BEIJING (AP) -- A landslide in southwestern China has toppled an elementary school building and buried 18 students and another person.

The Chinese government said the landslide struck a village in Yiliang county in Yunnan province on Thursday morning.

A statement on the Yiliang government website says the landslide caused a school to collapse and that 18 students were believed to have been in the building. Another person was trapped when a few houses were toppled.

A county foreign affairs office staffer says the village is a three-hour drive from the county seat and that rescuers have arrived at the site.

The statement says nearby residents have been moved from the area.

중국 정부는 목요일 아침 발생한 산사태로 윈난성의 이량현의 한 마을이 피해를 입었다고 밝혔다.

이량현 정부가 발표한 성명서에 따르면 학교 건물이 무너졌고 그 안에 18명의 학생이 있었던 것으로 추정된다고 전해졌다. 학생이 아닌 다른 한 명도 갇혀 있는 것으로 추정된다.

해당 현의 외무 담당관은 구조원들이 사고 지점에 막 도착했다고 말했다.

인근 거주민들은 사고 지점에서 대피조치 되었다.
