The nation’s biggest air carrier will allow only one free piece of luggage to be checked in for economy class passengers on international flights, starting Tuesday. Those taking flights to the U.S. are excluded.

Korean Air announced on Tuesday that it will adapt the Piece System which limits the number of luggage items instead of weight, following the international trend.

Under the new system, economy class passengers will be allowed to check in only one piece of luggage at a maximum weight of 23 kg; prestige class passengers two bags, maximum 32 kg each; and first class three bags of maximum 32 kg each. For flights bound for the U.S., however, luggage policies remain unchanged and economy passengers can still check in two pieces with a maximum of 23 kg each.

Until Monday, economy-class passengers on international flights were able to send a total weight of 20 kg, prestige-class passengers 30 kg, and first-class passengers 40 kg, regardless of the number of bags.

Additional charges are calculated based on the number of bags from Tuesday, not weight.

Regarding rising criticism, the airline said that it was an inevitable change to follow the international trend. After first announcing the plan in May, the airline had its passengers choose between the Piece System or the Weight System for the past four months before completely turning to the first.

Asiana Airlines, the second- largest flag carrier, said that it has no plans yet to shift to the Piece System.

야박한 대한항공, 짐 가방은 하나만?

대한항공이 이달부터 미주노선을 제외한 국제선 일반석을 이용하는 승객이 무료로 부칠 수 있는 수하물을 가방 1개로  제 한하기로 했다.

대한항공은 2일 국제 항공업계 추세에 따라 수하물 규정을 개수제(Piece System )로 통일하기로 했다고 밝혔다.

대한항공은 이런 방침을 지난 5월 발표한 이후 넉 달간 승객이 개수제와 무게제 중에서 하나를 선택하도록 했다가 이달부터 개수제로 일원화했다.

지금까지 미주노선을 제외한 국제선 노선의 일반석 승객은 가방 개수와 상관없이 총 무게 20㎏까지 수하물을 무료로 부칠 수 있었지만 이제는 최대 23kg짜리 수하물 1개로 제한된다. 단 미주노선은 기존대로 최대 23kg짜리 수하물 2개를 무료로 부 칠 수 있다.

프레스티지석은 기존 30kg에서 32kg짜리 2개로, 일등석은 기존 40kg에서 32kg짜 리 3개로 각각 바뀌었으며 초과 수하물 요금도 개수당 요금으로 조정됐다.

일부 고객은 대한항공이 수하물 요금을 더 받기 위해 규정을 바꾼 것이 아니냐며 불만을 토로하기도 했다.

대한항공의 한 관계자는 "개수제는 국제적인 추세여서 개정은 불가피했다"며  "수하물 규정 개정 내용을 지난 5월 공개한 뒤 유예기간을 충분히 뒀다"고 설명했다.

다만 짐 개수를 줄여야 하는 만큼 우리나라를 여행한 뒤 출국하는 관광객의 소비가 다소 위축될 가능성이 있다.

항공업계의 한 관계자는 "일본 관광객은 김과 같이 무겁지는 않지만 부피가 큰 물건을 가방 여러개에 나눠 출국하는 경우가 많다"며 "관광객 입장에서는 수하물 개 수를 줄이는 것에 불편함을 느낄 수 있다"고 말했다.

한편 아시아나 항공은 수하물 '무게제'를 당분간 바꾸지 않을 것으로 보인다.

아시아나항공의 한 관계자는 "국제적으로 개수제를 시행하는 곳이 더 많은 것은 사실이지만 아직은 규정을 바꿀 계획이 없다"고 말했다.
