A 15-year-old student received a prison term on Wednesday for habitually bullying a classmate until he jumped to his death.

A 15-year-old victim, surnamed Kim, leapt to his death from an apartment building in Daegu, some 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, in early June after enduring months of beatings and extortion.

Shortly before his suicide, the bullied student wrote that he might take his own life in a message on KaKaoTalk, a popular mobile messenger service in South Korea.

The Daegu District Court sentenced the high school student, whose identity was withheld, to a two-and-a-half term in a juvenile prison, adding the term could be reduced by six months depending on his behavior while in prison.

"The defendant bullied the student habitually for a sustained period of time, eventually leading to the victim's suicide," Judge Yang Ji-jeong said in a ruling. "The insults and harassment inflicted serious mental harm on the victim."

"A prison sentence is inevitable, as the defendant has not shown any remorse for his crime and family members of the victim have demanded severe punishment," he added.

In December, a middle-school student in Daegu jumped to his death over school bullying, sparking nationwide public concern.

Since then, seven other teenage students from Daegu have died in suicides despite the government's large-scale campaign to crack down on school violence. (Yonhap News)

K군은 지난 6월 대구에서 발생한 고교생 김모(15)군의 자살사건과 관련, 18차례에 걸쳐 폭행하거나 축구용품 등을 빼앗은 혐의로 구속기소됐다. 검찰은 K군에게 장기 5년에 단기 4년의 징역형을 구형했다.

김군은 지난 6월초 중학교 동창인 K군에게 괴롭힘을 당하고 있다는 내용의 메시지를 주변 사람들에게 남긴 뒤 아파트에서 뛰어내려 스스로 목숨을 끊었다.
