A compound in green tea -- epigallocatechin gallate -- may help combat cancer by shrinking tumors, researchers in Scotland suggest.

Study leader Dr. Christine Dufes of the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and colleagues at the University of Glasgow said the team used an approach that allowed the treatment of epigallocatechin gallate delivered specifically to the tumors intravenously.

The study, published in the journal Nanomedicine, found nearly two-thirds of the tumors it was delivered to either shrank or disappeared within one month. In addition, the treatment displayed no side effects to normal tissues, Dufes said.

"These are very encouraging results which we hope could pave the way for new and effective cancer treatments. When we used our method, the green tea extract reduced the size of many of the tumors every day, in some cases removing them altogether," he added.

Dufes said in a statement. "This research could open doors to new treatments for what is still one of the biggest killer diseases in many countries." (UPI)

한 달 안에 '암종양' 사라지게 하는 음료

녹차에 함유된 에피갈로카테킨갈레트(epigallocatechin gallate) 성분이 암환자의 종양을 줄이고, 항암작용을 한다고 스코트랜드 연구진이 밝혔다.

이 연구를 이끈 글래스고 대학의 약학ㆍ생명과학과의 크리스틴 듀프스 박사(Christine Dufes)는 에피갈로카테킨갈레트를 정맥주사로 직접 종양에 투여했을 때 종양의 크기가 줄어드는 현상을 발견했다.

나노의학지에 실린 이 논문은 녹차의 특정성분을 주사한지 한달 만에 종양의 크기가 3분의 2가량으로 줄어들거나 사라지고, 부작용도 없는 획기적인 연구 성과를 발표했다. 

듀프스 박사는 “이 연구는 암치료에 새로운 지평을 열 수 있는 고무적인 결과를 보여주고 있다. 이 방법을 사용했을 때 녹차의 추출물을 통해 매일 종양의 크기가 줄어드는 것을 확인했으며, 어떤 경우에는 종양이 모두 제거됐다"고 말했다.  

“이 연구로 아직도 많은 국가에서 사망 원인 1위의 하나로 알려진 암을 치료할 수 있는 새로운 방법을 찾을 수 있게 됐다”고 덧붙였다.
