BANGKOK (UPI) -- Two Canadian sisters who died in Thailand appear to have been poisoned by mosquito repellent mixed into a cocktail, autopsy results show.

Audrey and Noemi Belanger, from Pohenegamook, Quebec, were found dead in June in their hotel room on Phi Phi Island. A report on the autopsy shown to the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said the sisters had the mosquito repellent DEET in their systems.

DEET is a neurotoxic but it is an ingredient in a euphoric cocktail popular with many young tourists in Thailand. The other ingredients include cough syrup, Coca Cola and ground up kratom leaves, which are mildly narcotic.

Investigators say the sisters, who were last seen drinking with Brazilian friends, may have been given drinks with a lethal overdose of DEET accidentally mixed in.

Two young women, visitors from the United States and Norway, died on Phi Phi Island in 2009. No cause of death was determined, but investigators suggested they were poisoned.

조사당국에 따르면 두 자매는 마지막으로 브라질 친구들과 술을 마셨던 것으로 확인되었고 DEET의 성분이 과도하게 들어간 술을 마셨을 가능성이 있다고 전해졌다.
