English schoolboy Charlie Naysmith, 8, found a 600-gram chunk of ambergris, the official name for whale vomit, while walking along the beach near Bournemouth, England, according to news reports.

Ambergris is yellowish beige, feels waxy, and exudes a sweet perfume. Years of floating and exposure to the sun and salt turns the vomit into what looks like smooth rock.

Perfume makers highly sought ambergris years ago because it helps prolong the scent of perfumes. Nowadays, perfume makers substitute the “floating gold” with a synthetic substitute because ambergris is usually associated with whaling. The 600-gram piece of ambergris could be worth as much as 72 million won ($63,000).

Charlie’s father, Alex, said that Charlie “is into nature and is really interested in it.” He added that the family has contacted experts to see how to handle the situation. Charlie said that he was considering building a shelter for animals with his newfound riches.

영국의 소년이 해변을 걷다가 7천만원 이상의 가치를 가진 고래의 토사물인 용연향(ambergris)을 발견해 화제다.

지난 29일(현지시간) 영국 본머스 주변의 한 해변을 산책하던 찰리 나이스미스(8)는 약 600g 정도의 덩어리를 발견했으며 이는 향유고래 수컷의 창자 속에 생기는 이물(異物)인 용연향으로 밝혀졌다.

용연향의 향료성분은 알코올에 녹여서 추출하여 향수로 만들어져 값비싼 바다의 황금으로도 불린다.

이 소년이 발견한 용연향은 600g 정도로 4만파운드(약 7천200만 원) 정도의 가치를 가진 것으로 알려졌다.

찰리의 아버지 알렉스는 인터뷰에서 “찰리는 자연에 대한 관심이 많다”며 현재 발견된 용연향을 전문가들이 분석하고 있다고 밝혔다.

찰리는 용연향으로 생긴 수익금을 동물보호소 설립에 쓸 계획이라고 말했다.
