An 1877 Steinway grand piano used by many Motown greats has been restored, thanks to a little help from its friend, Paul McCartney.

The former Beatle told Motown Museum officials following a concert last summer in Detroit that he wanted to assist with the restoration of the piano after learning the historic instrument could no longer be played.

Robin Terry, chair of the museum‘s Board of Trustees, announced late Wednesday that the restoration had been completed.

Terry says the 9 foot (2.74 meter) piano will make its debut at a charitable event Sept. 18 at Steinway Hall in New York City, where McCartney and Motown founder Berry Gordy will play it for the first time following its restoration.

The piano then will go back on display at the Motown Museum’s famed Studio A. (AP)

비틀즈 멤버, ‘전설의 피아노’ 복원


수많은 모타운 사운드 거장들로부터 사랑받은 1877년산 스타인웨이 그랜드피아노가 비틀즈의 멤버 폴 매카트니 덕에 다시 빛을 보게 됐다.

폴 매카트니는 작년 여름에 열린 디트로이트 콘서트 후 더 이상 연주할 수 없는 상태가 되어 박물관에 보관중이던 이 전설적인 피아노를 복원하고 싶다고 관계자들에게 밝혔다.

모타운 사운드란 60년대와 70년대 미국 디트로이트를 중심으로 형성돼 큰 인기를 끈 음악의 형태로 마이클잭슨, 스티비원더 등 뮤지션들에게 영향을 미친 바 있다.

모타운 박물관 이사회 의장인 로빈 테리는 지난 수요일 이 피아노의 복원작업이 마침내 완료되었다고 발표했다.

테리는 이 피아노가 오는 9월 18일 뉴욕 스타인웨이 홀에서 열릴 자선행사에서 공개될 예정이며, 폴 매카트니와 모타운 스타일의 창시자 베리 고르디(Berry Gordy)가 이 피아노를 연주할 것이라고 말했다.

행사 후 이 전설의 피아노는 모타운 박물관의 명예의 전당에 전시될 예정이다. (코리아헤럴드)
