Catholic Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, just appointed the next archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, Monday apologized for his drunken driving arrest.

Cordileone, 56, was arrested at a checkpoint early Saturday in San Diego while driving his mother home after having dinner with friends, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Police officer Mark McCullough said the cleric was taken into custody at 12:26 a.m. and released from jail shortly before noon after posting $2,500 bail. He is to be arraigned on the misdemeanor charge Oct. 9, the newspaper said.

“He was very calm, somewhat apologetic at the time,” McCullough said. “He said he‘d been drinking. But he wasn’t a stumbling, falling-down drunk.”

Cordileone, who serves in the Diocese of Oakland and was named to the archbishop‘s post a month ago, said in a statement he “was found to be over the California legal blood-alcohol level.”

“I apologize for my error in judgment and feel shame for the disgrace I have brought upon the church and myself,” he said. “I will repay my debt to society and I ask forgiveness from my family and my friends and co-workers at the Diocese of Oakland and the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

”I pray that God, in his inscrutable wisdom, will bring some good out of this.“ (UPI)

美, 신임 대주교 공개 사죄, 왜?


미국 샌프란시스코 대교구의 신임 가톨릭 대주교 살바토레 코르디레온이 지난 월요일 자신의 음주운전 혐의를 시인하고 사과했다.

56세의 주교 코르디레온은 지난 주 토요일 친구들과 저녁식사를 한 뒤 모친을 방문하기 위해 운전하던 중 샌디에이고 인근의 음주운전 검문소에서 적발되었다고 샌프란시스코크로니클이 보도했다.

사건을 담당한 마크 맥컬로 경관은 코르디레온 주교가 밤 12시 26분경 체포되었다가 다음날 2,500달러(한화 약 2백8십만원)의 벌금을 내고 그날 정오 즈음 석방되었다고 말했다. 그의 혐의는 경범죄로 처리될 예정이라고 이 신문은 보도했다.

맥컬로 경관은 주교가 당시 매우 차분했으며 적발 당시 죄의식을 느끼고 있었다고 밝혔다. 그는 코르디레온 주교가 본인의 음주를 시인했으나 비틀거리거나 완전히 취할 정도의 수준은 아니었다고 말했다.

코르디레온 주교는 현재 오클랜드 교구에 소속되어 있으며 약 한달 전 대주교로 지명된 것으로 알려졌다.

코르디레온 주교는 잘못된 판단을 내려 가톨릭교회를 부끄럽게 한 것에 대해 사죄하며, 사회에 봉사하는 것을 죗값을 치르겠다고 밝혔다. (코리아헤럴드)
