The last-place Hanwha Eagles in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) have fired their manager, Han Dae-hwa.

The Eagles dismissed him late Monday night, the team officials said, with 28 games left this season. Han's three-year contract was set to expire at the end of this year.

Mondays are off days for all eight teams in the KBO, the nation's top professional baseball league. Through last weekend's play, the Eagles had the league's worst record with 39 wins, 64 losses and two draws. They were 22 games behind the first-place Samsung Lions, and 15 games out of the fourth and the final playoff spot.

The Eagles have underachieved this year despite rosy pre-season predictions, following the addition of former Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star pitcher Park Chan-ho and the return of the franchise slugger Kim Tae-kyun, who'd spent the previous season and a half in Japan.

Han became the Eagles' manager before the 2010 season. They finished last in 2010 and tied for sixth with the LG Twins in 2011.

Officials said Han Yong-deok, the team's bench coach, will be the interim manager the rest of the season.

Han Dae-hwa enjoyed an illustrious playing career and is regarded as the KBO's greatest third baseman. He made his professional debut with the OB Bears, currently the Doosan Bears, in 1983. But his prime seasons came with the Haitai Tigers, now the Kia Tigers, between 1986 and 1993, helping the Gwangju-based club win six Korean Series championships in that span.

Han won his lone batting title in 1990 with a .335 average, and retired with a record eight Golden Gloves, including six in a row from 1986 to 1991.

He retired with a career .279 average in 1,331 games, with 163 home runs and 712 runs batted in (RBI). After retiring in 1997, Han managed Seoul-based Dongguk University from 1998 to 2003, and served as a hitting coach and later a bench coach for the Lions.

'전격 경질' 한화 감독, 심경 물어봤더니...

프로야구 한화 이글스의 한대화(52) 감독이 성적 부진의 책임을 지고 결국 시즌 중 물러났다.

한화 구단은 28일 "한대화 감독이 전날 사의를 표명했다"면서 "오늘 대전구장에 서 열릴 넥센과의 홈 경기부터 한용덕 수석코치의 감독대행 체제로 올 시즌 잔여 경 기를 치른다"고 밝혔다.

구단의 공식 발표는 자진사퇴 형식이지만 한 감독에게 먼저 계약해지를 알리는 등 사실상 경질 쪽에 가깝다는 것이 관계자들의 말이다.

한 감독은 올 시즌 바닥을 벗어나지 못한 팀 성적 때문에 비공식적으로 몇 차례 사의를 표명한 것으로 알려졌다.

삼성 라이온즈 수석코치를 지내던 2009년 9월 한화 사령탑으로 내정된 한  감독 은 계약 기간이 올해 말까지이다.

올 시즌 한화는 27일 현재 39승2무64패로 8개 구단 중 최하위에 머물러 있다.

한화는 한 감독이 지휘봉을 잡은 첫해인 2010년에는 최하위, 지난해에는 LG 트윈스와 공동 6위로 시즌을 마감했다.

한 감독은 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 "성적이 좋지 못해 팬들에게 미안하다"고 말했다.

그는 "능력이 부족하다고 많이 느꼈다"면서 "퇴진은 시간문제인 것으로 생각해 왔지만 시즌 중 이렇게 돼 안타깝다"고 덧붙였다.

한화는 올해 일본 프로야구 무대에서 복귀한 거포 김태균, 미국 메이저리그에서 아시아 투수로는 최다승(124승)을 올린 박찬호, 불펜 강화를 위해 LG에서 자유계약 선수(FA)로 풀린 송신영 등을 영입하며 재도약을 노렸지만 성적 부진으로 사령탑의 중도 퇴진을 맞았다.

선수층이 엷은 상황에서 구단은 최근 몇 년간 선수 영입에 소홀했고 올해에는 특히 외국인 선수의 부진 등이 겹치면서 한 감독의 경기 운영에도 적지않은 영향을 미쳤다는 분석이다.

한 감독은 대전 출신으로 대전고와 동국대를 졸업했고 1983년 OB를 시작으로 해 태(1986년), LG(1994년), 쌍방울(1997년)을 거치며 화려한 선수 생활을 보냈다.

현역시절 주로 3루수를 맡아 통산 15시즌 동안 1천331경기에 출전해 타율 0.279 와 1천190안타, 163홈런, 712타점을 남겼고 1990년 타격왕, 1989년과 1990년 출루율 1위, 1986년부터 1994년 사이 8차례 골든글러브(1986∼1991년 6회 연속 포함), 1988 년 올스타전 MVP를 차지했다.

1982년 세계야구선수권대회 일본과 결승전 당시 역전 3점 홈런의 주인공인 한 감독은 해태와 LG에서 한국시리즈 우승을 일궈내며 '우승 청부사'로 이름을 날렸고, 은퇴 후 1998∼2003년 동국대 감독을 지냈다.

2003년 말부터는 삼성 타격코치와 1군 수석코치로 지내다 고향팀 한화의 재건을 책임질 중책을 맡았지만 결국 뜻을 이루지 못했다.
