Swimmer Michael Phelps’ four gold and two silver medals from the London Olympics are at risk.

Phelps is under scrutiny after photos of his Louis Vuitton campaign emerged on Twitter, violating Rule 40 of the International Olympic Committee guidebook.

According to Rule 40, no athlete is allowed to participate in non-Olympic marketing during the Games or during a specified period afterward.

The official IOC rule states: “A competitor or a team may lose the benefit of any ranking obtained in relation to other events at the Olympic Games at which he or it was disqualified or excluded; in such case the medals and diplomas won by him or it shall be returned to the IOC.”

The restrictions ended on Aug. 15, and the photos were scheduled to be released on Aug. 16, but the photos surfaced on Aug. 13.

Both Phelps and the French fashion house have denied releasing the images before this date.

If this is true and the photos were leaked by a rogue individual, Phelps will not be penalized. However, if the brand in fact intentionally leaked the photos, Phelps may be stripped of his medals.

미국 야후스포츠는 17일(미국시각) 펠프스의 루이비통 광고사진이 대중에게 공개된 시점이 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 규정에 위배돼 문제가 되고 있다고 보도했다.

IOC는 런던올림픽을 앞두고 상표 및 광고와 관련한 새 규정인 ‘룰40(Rule 40)’을 공지하며 엄포를 놓은 바 있다.

‘룰40’은 7월18일부터 8월15일까지 올림픽 공식 스폰서가 아닌 아닌 업체가 올림픽 선수나 팀을 이용해 광고를 할 수 없도록 한 규정이다. 이를 어기면 해당 선수와 팀에 거액의 벌금을 부과하고, 메달을 획득한 경우 박탈할 수 있게 돼있다.

IOC와 런던올림픽 조직위는 올림픽 개막 이전에 ‘룰40’을 엄격하게 적용할 것임을 밝힌 바 있다.

이번 런던대회에서 코카콜라, 맥도날드, 비자, 아디다스, 파나소닉 등과 같은 대기업은 무려 1억달러에 이르는 거금을 내고 공식 스폰서가 됐다.

펠프스의 루이비통 광고 캠페인은 이같은 IOC 규정을 감안해 8월16일부터 시작하도록 돼 있었다.

그러나 펠프스가 나오는 루이비통 광고사진 2장은 미리 유출돼 8월13일부터 미국 방송을 통해 보도됐다. 유튜브에도 올랐다.

루이비통과 펠프스측은 모두 사진 유출 의혹에 대해 강력히 부인하고 있다. (코리아헤럴드)
