A video store owner who lost $26,000 in unpaid late fees and unreturned videos over the past three years, said she publicly exposed the names of customers who caused her losses

Christie Ross in North Carolina set a whiteboard she coined the “Wall of Shame” in front of her store with 300 names of people who either had not paid late fees or returned videos.

“It probably is harsh, but the way I look at it is -- a lot of these people have cussed us,” Ross said. “Who cares about late fees?”

In addition to the “Wall of Shame,” she has posted the names on the business’ Facebook page.

She said that she talked with her attorney about the actions in advance and that it was legal because customers signed a contract.

However, another attorney Ben Whitley said that it was not legal. He said that under state debt collection law, posting the names of those who owe is a violation of the debt collection statute’s unreasonable publication clause.

Customers claimed that Ross’s action violates the right to privacy.
