The Australian government reportedly decided to remove Korean language from the major foreign languages officially taught in Australian schools.

News reports said the Korean Education Centre and Korean Cultural Office located in Sidney said on Friday the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority decided to exclude Korean from the foreign language list.

ACARA, an independent organization under the Australian government, takes charge of curriculum assessment and evaluation for schools in Australia as the top educational decision-maker.

The decision means that the government and the educational authorities will not offer financial support for Korean language courses, which could reduce access.

ACARA’s recent decision comes as a surprise as Korea is Australia’s fourth biggest trade partner. In light of increasing importance of Korean, the Australian government introduced Korean on the “National Asian Language and Studies in Schools Program” along with Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian in 2009.

Korean is now categorized as a third-level foreign language alongside Vietnamese, Arabic and Greek. The languages in the third-level are to be taught for immigrants or foreign students.

An official at Korean Cultural Office said that the recent decision of ACARA seriously undermined the efforts of the Korean government on the dissemination of the Korean language in Australia. He added the office has strongly requested ACARA to reconsider the exclusion.

호주, ‘4대 교역상대국’ 한국에 뒤통수

호주 정부가 최근 주요 외국어 교육군에서 한국어를 제외하기로 한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

호주교육평가보고청(ACARA)이 최근 호주의 각 초중고교에서 정식으로 가르칠 수 있는 주요 외국어 교육군에서 한국어를 제외하기로 했다고 10일 시드니 주재 한국교육원과 한국문화원이 밝혔다.

ACARA는 호주 연방정부 산하 독립기관으로, 초중고교 교과과정의 개발과 평가작업 등을 담당하는 호주 최고 권위의 교육정책 수립 기관이다.

주요 외국어 교육군에서 밀려날 경우 호주 학생들이 정식 초중고교 교육 과정상 해당 외국어를 선택해 배우기가 어렵게 되며 정부가 주요 외국어 교사들에게 지원하는 각종 재정지원도 받을 수 없게 된다.

한편 지난 2009년 호주 연방정부가 갈수록 중요도가 높아지고 있는 아시아권 언어 구사자를 확대하기 위해 ‘4대 아시아 언어교육 프로그램(National Asian Language and Studies in Schools Program)’를 도입하고 여기에 중국어, 일본어, 인도네시아어와 함께 한국어를 포함시킨 바 있어 ACARA의 이번 결정은 의외로 받아들여지고 있다.

ACARA는 한국어를 베트남어, 아랍어, 그리스어 등과 함께 세번째 단계 외국어 교육군으로 변경해 주로 해당 배경이 있는 교민이나 유학생들을 상대로 주말학교에서 가르치도록 했다.

한국문화원 관계자는 ACARA의 이번 결정은 호주 내에서 한국어 보급 확산을 위한 힘써온 우리 정부의 노력에 찬물을 끼얹는 것이라며 ACARA 측에 이번 결정을 재고해줄 것을 강력히 요청했다고 덧붙였다.
