The Swiss ambassador celebrated his last national day event in Seoul on Wednesday, which fell on the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties with Korea.

Swiss Ambassador Thomas Kupfer said that the relations between both countries are “mature and on a very friendly and solid basis” during his welcoming speech, before he moves onto his next post.

Kupfer also noted Switzerland’s unique and sad historical relationship with the Korean peninsula, referring to their required presence at the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission.

“I believe firmly that one day the NNSC won’t be necessary anymore ― this is the day when the two Koreas and its people have found their way for reunification,” said the ambassador.

The ambassador also marked the national day by launching the online version of the “50 Years Diplomatic Relations Switzerland-Korea,” a book published by the embassy that documents the countries’ relations over the past half-century.

The event was Kupfer’s last official one in Korea as the ambassador will be posted in Singapore within the next month.

“The last four years have been a very interesting and rewarding time,” he said.

Kupfer continued praise for Korea, saying it saw the most positive, solid and consistent transformation in the world.

The ambassador also added that he was thankful that so many Koreans seek Swiss beauty, famous chocolate and cheese, and artisan watches. But he noted that Switzerland a leader in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and other high-tech industries.
