The World Badminton Federation on Wednesday turned down India’s complaint that Japan threw their match against Taiwan during the women’s doubles event at London 2012 Olympic Games.

“There‘s been no referees’ report, no umpires‘ report whatsoever,“ said BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund during a news conference. He said there was "no ground" to investigate the matter further.

The world’s No. 5 pair, Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa of Japan, had been accused of losing deliberately to Taiwan’s Hsing and Chien Yu Chin during a Group B match on Tuesday. The Japanese pair, who were favored to beat the no. 10 Taiwan, unexpectedly lost 2-0.

Indian team missed out on a quarter-final berth by just a point, after tying with Japan and Taipei on the number of wins.

India’s badminton coach Pullela Gopi Chand said Japan “wanted to lose” in order to avoid perennial powerhouse China.

”In Group B, Taipei (Taiwan) had to and wanted to win, but Japan wanted to lose to be second in the group to avoid China,“ said Gopichand.

“Just because it’s subtle and the crowd didn‘t make a noise, the TV didn’t make a noise, doesn‘t mean it didn’t happen. In this match only one team wanted to lose.”

India’s appeal came on the heels of a match-fixing scandal surrounding four women‘s doubles pairs, one Chinese, one Indonesian and two from South Korea. All eight athletes were disqualified from competing.

런던올림픽 배드민턴 여자복식에서 벌어진 ‘고의 패배’ 사건으로 한국, 중국, 인도네시아 선수 8명이 실격 처리된 가운데 일본도 일부러 져주기 경기를 했다는 의혹이 제기됐다.

하지만 일본의 경우에는 승부조작으로 볼만한 근거가 부족하다는 판단이 내려졌다.

인도배드민턴연맹(BAI)은 올림픽 배드민턴 여자복식 B조 조별리그 일본과 대만 의 경기에 승부조작 의혹이 있다고 세계배드민턴연맹(BWF)에 제소했지만 기각 결정을 받았다고 인도 일간 힌두스탄타임스가 2일 보도했다.

아킬레시 다스 굽타 BAI 회장은 “일본이 다음 라운드에서 편한 상대를 만나려고 고의로 대만에 지는 바람에 인도가 탈락했다는 내용을 담아 공식으로 이의신청했다”며 “하지만 항의가 기각되는 바람에 우리는 모두 충격에 빠졌다”고 밝혔다.

BWF가 인도의 신청을 기각한 이유는 증거 부족이다.

토마스 룬드 BWF 사무총장은 로이터 통신과의 인터뷰에서 “그 경기에 대해 엄중한 조치를 취할 만한 근거를 찾지 못했다”고 말했다.

사건의 발단은 지난달 31일(현지시간) 열린 B조 3차전 일본과 대만의 경기에서 세계랭킹 5위인 후지이 미즈키-카기와 레이카(일본) 조가 한 수 아래로 여겨지던 세계랭킹 10위 청원싱-첸위친(대만) 조에 0-2로 무기력하게 진 경기다.

일본은 대만에 완패함으로써 조 2위로 올라 8강에서 세계랭킹 2위 톈칭-자오윈 레이(중국•D조 2위)조를 피하게 됐고, 그 바람에 인도는 일본과 똑같은 2승1패를 기록하고도 조별리그 탈락의 고배를 들었다.

대만, 일본, 인도는 똑같이 2승1패를 거뒀지만 득실차로 보면 대만 21, 일본 4, 인도 3으로 인도가 최하위다.

인도 배드민턴 대표팀의 푸렐라 고피찬드 감독은 “일본과 대만 모두 지고 싶어했다는 사실은 명백하다”며 “아무도 중국팀을 8강에서 만나고 싶지 않을 것”이라고 말했다.

아쉽게 8강 진출이 좌절된 인도 여자복식의 즈왈라 구타는 “우리는 정말 열심히 했는데 누군가 일부러 지는 바람에 예선 탈락한다는 건 정말 가슴 아프다”며 “지금이라도 제대로 조사해 조치를 취해주기를 간절히 바란다”고 호소했다.
