English websites to promote Korean culture targeting international Internet users are not accessible from popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo!, a local news report said.

The Korean Cultural Heritage Administration produced an English website for foreigners that provide information about Korea’s historical and cultural heritages such as Seokguram and Gyeongbokgung.

However, the information does not appear on Google or Yahoo!. Even the National Institute of the Korean Language’s Korean language education service for foreigners is blocked from English search engines.

Among 43 Korean government websites, 14 were inaccessbile from external search, according to the Sookmyung Web Development Research Institute.

The government, the National Assembly and the Supreme Court also have similar problems, the report said.

문화재청은 유네스코 문화 유산인 석굴암과 조선의 왕궁인 경복궁 등 역사적, 문화적 유산에 대한 자료를 담은 영어 웹사이트를 만들었으나 구글, 야후와 같은 검색 엔진에서 검색이 되지 않는다. 심지어 국립국어연구원에서 외국인들을 위해 만든 한국 교육 자료도 검색이 되지 않는다.

정부 기관뿐만 아니라 한류에 공헌하는 스타들의 공식 웹페이지, 외국에 진출한 패션 브랜드의 웹페이지도 검색 엔진을 통해 접근이 불가능하다.

숙명여대 웹발전연구소의 조사에 따르면 43개의 정부부처 웹사이트 중 14개가 외부 검색을 완전히 차단한 것으로 드러났다.
