\The country's top science university said Friday its board of directors has put off the decision on whether to terminate the contract of its incumbent president.

The council of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) was scheduled to vote on a motion to cancel its contract with the school's president, Suh Nam-pyo, as he refused calls to step down despite allegations of mismanagement.

"But we've decided to leave all matters to Suh. We will seek solutions later on," said Oh Myung, chairman of the 16-member school board, right after the meeting. He spearheaded the bid to oust him.

The 76-year-old former Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, who began his second four-year term in 2010, came under fire for introducing a competition-oriented tuition system, resulting in pressure-packed classrooms.

Calls for his resignation grew after a series of suicides since last year by students and a professor at the school, based in Daejeon, some 160 kilometers south of Seoul. Most recently, a KAIST student was found dead in April on the school campus in an apparent suicide.

Upon the delay of the decision on the motion, Suh and board chairman Oh will sit down for talks to find common ground, council officials said. (Yonhap News)
