More girls than boys are likely to experience math anxiety that may hurt their classroom performance in the subject, British researchers say.

High math anxiety was a stronger predictor of poor test performance for girls than for boys,

researchers from Cambridge and Oxford Universities said -- and could keep girls from persisting with their math education and pursuing careers that require quantitative skills.

Despite higher levels of anxiety in girls, the researchers said they found no difference in girls' actual performance in math as compared to boys', LiveScience.com reported Monday.

"These results might suggest that girls may have had the potential to perform better than boys in mathematics, however, their performance may have been attenuated by higher levels of (mathematics anxiety)," the researchers wrote in the journal Behavioral and Brain Functions.

Researchers analyzed at tests and questionnaires from 4,333 English school children in their early to mid teens.

A number of studies have suggested girls suffer from higher mathematics anxiety than boys but it is not clear why, they said. Some argue it grows out of sex roles that assign math to the male domain, while others say girls may be more open about feelings of anxiety or may be more critical than boys of their math performance. 영국의 캐임브리지와 옥스퍼드 대학의 공동 연구진은 여학생들이 남학생보다 수학 문제를 푸는데 불안감을 더 많이 느껴 학습 성과를 저해한다는 연구결과를 발표했다. 

4,333명의 십대 중반의 영국 청소년을 대상으로 진행된 이 연구는 수학 불안감이 여학생들의 수리영역 시험 성적과도 밀접한 관계가 있음을 밝혀냈다. 

여학생들의 실제 수학 과목 성취도를 남학생과 비교했을 때  뒤떨어 지지 않았으나, 소위 '수학 울렁증'이 여성들에게 숫자와 관련된 기술을 요하는 직업을 갖는 것과 수학공부를 지속하는 것에 방해 요소가 되는 것으로 나타났다.

이 논문은 “이 연구결과는 여성이 (비슷한 성적이 아닌) 남성보다 수학을 더 잘할 수 있는 가능성이 있음에도 불구하고 수학 불안증으로 인해 더 좋은 성과를 내지 못하는 것으로 보인다”고 말했다.

지금까지 여학생들이 남학생들에 비해 높은 수학 불안증을 가지고 있음을 밝혀낸 연구는 많았지만 그 이유에 대해서는 의견이 분분했다.

수학과 관련된 일들이 남성의 성역할로 구분되기 때문이라는 주장이 있는가 하면 여학생들이 불안한 감정 자체를 더 많이 느끼거나 여성이 자신의 수리적 성취도에 대해 비판적이라는 이유까지 다양해 일치점을 찾는데 난항을 겪고 있다.
