U.S. government’s marine science agency has officially declared that mermaids do not exist, according to local news reports.

“No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found,” the National Ocean Service wrote online last week.

The post appears to be a response to pouring inflow of public inquiries following a TV show called “Mermaids: The Body Found” aired on Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet network in May.

The agency acknowledged the timing of the post was "arguably" tied to the documentary, but denied the assumption that the show prompted the posting.

The program is about two scientists finding an unknown marine life which uncannily resembles human. Although the show was fictional, its documentary format seems to have led many viewers to believing the discovery was real.

Tales about the part-human, part-marine life creature have captivated the imaginations of many for thousands of years, from Homer’s Odyssey to Australian folklore, the National Ocean Service explained.

In fact, judging by cave paintings, even some of the earliest humans living 30,000 years ago seemed to have imagined magical female figures from the sea, the agency added.

인어는 신화나 전설 속에 등장하는 반은 인간이고 반은 해양생물의 형태를 띄고 있는 생명체로서, 그리스 시인 호머의 ‘오디세이’에서 호주의 민속설화까지 등장하는 등 수천 년간 전 세계 사람들의 상상력을 자극해 왔다고 미국 해양청은 설명했다.

심지어 삼 만년 전에 살았던 고대 인간들의 동물 벽화에서도 ‘바다에서 나온 수수께끼의 여성형 생물’에 대한 이야기를 엿볼 수 있다고 해양청은 덧붙였다.
