A mysterious object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea isn't a UFO, Swedish researches say, but they add they don't have a sure idea of what it is, either.

The object, located on the sea floor between Sweden and Finland, is some sort of "natural, geological formation," Peter Lindberg, the leader of the Ocean Explorer team, told FoxNews.com.

Lindberg and other scientists and divers spent 12 day exploring the 60-meter -wide roughly circular object under the Baltic they had first seen in sonar scans a year ago.

"It's not obviously an alien spacecraft. It's not made of metal," he said.

Lindberg concedes that it could be an alien space ship but only if aliens chose to construct their spacecraft out of meteor-like rocks.

"Who says they had to use metal?" Lindberg joked. "This trip has raised a lot of questions."

The central object appears to be a giant stone, "the kind divers see in keys and harbors," Lindberg said.

"There are other, loose stones lying around as well," he added. "The formation of rocks is 60 meters in diameter."

Strangely, there appears to be a pillar holding up the 60-meter-wide object, Lindberg said.

‘해저 UFO’ 소동, 알고보니…

지난해 발트해에서 발견된 정체불명의 물체가 UFO가 아닐 가능성이 높다고 전문가들이 밝혔다.

UPI통신이 18일(현지시간) 보도한 바에 따르면 해양 탐사 팀의 피터 린드버그가 12일에 걸쳐 해저에서 탐사를 계속한 결과 이 물체가 지질학적으로 자연스럽게 생겼을 것이라고 추정했다고 한다.

“물론 이것은 외계인의 우주선이 아닙니다. 금속으로 만들어지지 않았거든요,”라고 린드버그는 말했다. 그는 만약 외계인들이 운석 같은 돌을 이용해 우주선을 만들었다면 이 물체가 우주선일 수도 있다고 농담조로 덧붙였다.

그러나 너비가 60미터에 달하고 바위로 이루어진 듯한 물체의 정체가 정확히 무엇인지는 아직 밝혀지지 않았다.

린드버그는 해저에서 이 물체를 떠받들고 있는 기둥이 있는 듯하다며, 이 기묘한 현상의 이유를 밝혀내기 위해 촬영한 영상을 다시 분석하고 있다고 밝혔다.

지난 6월, 이 물체가 처음 발견됐을 당시 일부는 물체의 기묘한 형태로 봐서 가라앉은 외계인의 우주선일지도 모른다는 추정을 했다. 물체는 원형으로 되어 있으며 한 쪽 구석이 움푹 들어간 형태로 되어 있는데 이는 영화 ‘스타워즈’에 등장하는 ‘밀레니엄 팔콘’호와 흡사하다.
