Canadian volunteers are being invited to join a program to help North Korean defectors this summer.

The Canadian Embassy is hosting the Inside Canada Defector Program to give English teachers the chance to help North Koreans adapt to their new lives in the South.

Volunteers are being sought for one or both of the intensive two-week sessions to be held at the embassy in Seoul. The first will be offered from July 15-28, and the second from July 30-Aug. 10.

While the exact scheduling has yet to be confirmed, volunteers would be expected to give a daily three-hour class for either one or two weeks.

The program aims to help university students or young professionals in need of English skills for academic or career progression. It is aimed at building oral communication skills with a focus on Canadian themes and global culture.

North Korean defectors face challenges integrating into South Korean society because of their lack of exposure to English and global culture. They also lack the financial and family support systems that most South Korean students enjoy.

“Canada has a deep, longstanding commitment to promoting North Korean human rights, and peaceful reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula,” said Geoffrey Dean, Counselor for Political, Economic and Public Affairs at the Canadian Embassy.

“We are always looking for ways to make a positive contribution. With this program, we are drawing on the large population of dedicated, talented, Canadian English teachers in South Korea to help young North Korean defectors achieve their goals through success in their university studies.”
