A U.S. university is giving every entering freshman in the class of 2016 a new smartphone and the associated AT&T cellular service, school officials say.

Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., said the program is meant "to support the university's mission of providing technology tools to enhance the student experience and prepare students for success in a rapidly changing world," InformationWeek.com reported Tuesday.

In addition to receiving Lumia 900 Windows phones, Seton Hall students will have access to the SHUmobile application that gives students access to campus directories, maps, news feeds and other information.

A new app written just for the Lumia 900 phones, called the "Freshmen Experience," offers social media integration and channels for communicating directly with fellow students, roommates, advisers and others, the school said.

"Mobile technology has become ubiquitous and pervasive, but we are just beginning to understand the breadth of its impact across campus," said Michael Taylor, head of mobile research at Seton Hall.

The smartphones, Taylor said, will make it easier for students and faculty to follow the three C's: connect, collaborate and create. (UPI)

미국의 한 대학이 2016년에 입학하는 신입생 전원에게 신형 스마트폰과 AT&T의 휴대전화 서비스를 무료로 제공할 것이라고 밝혔다.

뉴저지주에 위치한 세튼 홀 대학은 “급속히 변화하는 세상에서 학생들에게 성공을 위한 준비와 경험을 증대시키고자 스마트폰을 제공하기로 했다”며 이 프로그램의 동기를 설명했다.

학생들은 루미아 900 윈도우 폰과 함께 학교 캠퍼스의 주소록과 지도, 뉴스 및 정보등이 수록된 어플리케이션도 받게 된다.

이 앱은 루미아 900 윈도우 폰을 위해 설계 되었으며 학생, 기숙사 룸메이트간에 직접적인 소통이 가능한 통합 소셜 미디어 기능이 탑재되어있다.

“휴대전화 기술은 널리 보급되고 편재되어있다. 우리는 그저 캠퍼스 안에서 그 영향력의 폭을 가늠해보는 초기상태에 있다”고 세튼 홀 대학 관계자가 말했다.

그는 이 스마트폰이 학생과 학부가 연결, 협력, 창조를 이뤄가는데 도움이 될 것이라고 덧붙였다.
