A Frenchman who has lost all of his limbs said on Monday he plans to swim 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) across the Red Sea from Taba in Egypt to Jordan's Aqaba this week as part of a global challenge.

Using prosthetic limbs with flippers attached, Philippe Croizon, 44, said:

"If things go as planned and I get the green light from the Egyptian authorities, I will swim from Africa to Asia on Friday."

"I should leave Taba for Aqaba early in the morning (0300 GMT). This could take from 12 to 14 hours, depending on the weather, currents and wind," Croizon told reporters at the French embassy in Amman.

"I hope the sharks will not be hungry."

Croizon said French swimmer Arnaud Chassery, 34, and three disabled Jordanians plan to join him.

On May 17, Croizon braved strong winds and currents to swim from Papua New Guinea to Indonesia, in the first stretch of a mission to complete five arduous swims between continents.

"I know the situation in Egypt is still unstable. But it should not stop this humanitarian mission," he said.

"I am here to show that disabled persons are sometimes gifted, regardless of differences like religion, politics and colour."

Croizon, who swam the English Channel in 2010, has set out on his aquatic journey across the globe to highlight the abilities of disabled people, and to convey a message of peace and solidarity.

He had to have all four limbs amputated after he was electrocuted by a current of more than 20,000 volts in 1994 as he tried to remove a TV antenna from a roof.

In July, he plans to swim between Europe and Africa by traversing the Strait of Gibraltar, braving busy shipping lanes and polluted waters.

The stretch is just 14 kilometres as the crow flies, but it means a 20- to 25-kilometre swim because of strong currents.

In August, he will swim between the islands of Big Diomede in Russia and Little Diomede in the United States in a round-trip swim of around 10 kilometres in frigid waters as low as zero degrees Celsius. (AFP)

사지 절단 남성 홍해 수영 횡단

지난 2010년 사지절단 장애를 딛고 도버 해협을 수영으로 건넌 프랑스 남성 필립 크루아종(44)이 새 도전에 나선다.

지난 1994년 지붕에서 TV 안테나를 옮기다 2만 볼트가 넘는 고압선에 감전돼 팔 다리를 모두 잃은 그는 대륙 사이의 해협 5곳을 모두 횡단한다는 계획에 따라 지난 5월 17일 파푸아 뉴기니부터 인도네시아까지 태평양 우퉁 해협을 수영으로 건넌 바 있다.

이번에는 이집트의 홍해 연안 도시인 타바에서 요르단의 항구도시 아카바까지 약 25Km에 이르는 거리를 횡단하겠다고 밝혔다. 그는 15일(이하 현지시간) 인공 수족에 오리발을 장착하고 12-14시간에 걸쳐 수영을 하게되며, 장거리 수영 챔피언 출 신인 아르노 샤스리(34)와 요르단 장애인 3명도 함께 횡단에 나설 예정이다. 

그는 12일 암만주재 프랑스대사관에서 기자들에게 이 같은 계획을 밝히고 "때로 는 장애인도 종교ㆍ정치ㆍ인종적 차이를 막론하고 재능을 지니고 있음을 보여주고 싶다"고 말했다.

장애인의 기량을 펼치고 평화와 연대의 메시지를 전달하기 위한 취지로 지난 20 10년 도버 해협을 횡단한 크루아종은 "이집트의 상황이 여전히 불안정하다는 점은 알고 있지만 이런 인도주의적 임무를 중단할 수는 없다"고 단호한 의지를 보였다.

오는 7월에는 유럽과 아프리카를 잇는 지브롤터 해협을 건너겠다는 계획도 함께 밝혔다. 이 지역은 항상 화물선으로 붐비고 바닷물이 오염돼 있을 뿐 아니라, 직선 거리는 14Km이지만 강한 물살로 인해 20~25Km를 헤엄쳐야 건널 수 있어 어려움이 예상되는 곳이다.

8월에도 베링 해협의 러시아령인 '빅 디오메데 섬'부터 미국령인 '리틀 디오메데 섬'까지 왕복 10Km에 이르는 거리를 수영할 계획이다. 이 곳 또한 수온이 0℃ 가깝게 낮아 결코 쉽지 않은 도전이 될 전망이다.
