A gas leak accident occurred Thursday afternoon at a polysilicon factory based in Yeosu, a port city 455 kilometers south of Seoul, poisoning more than 40 workers, fire authorities said.

A total of 42 affected employees of Hankook Silicon Co. were taken to several nearby hospitals, with 41 of them experiencing bouts of nausea, the fire authorities said, but no casualties were reported.

The company had been conducting test operations after it built an additional factory in the area when a crack in the gas pipeline led to the toxic gas leak, the authorities suspect.

Hankook Silicon, established in 2008, is a producer of polysilicon, an essential raw material for solar cells.

The fire authorities and the company said they are currently looking into the exact cause of the accident. (Yonhap News)

여수 공장서 가스 누출, 피해속출!

전남 여수 국가산업단지내 한국실리콘㈜에서 가스 누출사고가 나 작업 근로자 40여명이 중독됐다.

7일 오후 1시 30분께 전남 평여동 여수국가산단내 한국실리콘㈜ 제2공장에서 가스누출 사고가 발생, 작업인부 42명이 염화수소 등 독성혼합가스에 노출됐다.

사고가 나자 공장측은 오후 3시3분께 밸브를 차단했다.

가스에 노출된 인부들은 인근 전남병원 등으로 이송됐으며 1명을 제외한 대다수 근로자는 메스꺼움을 호소했지만 인명피해는 없는 것으로 알려졌다.

이 공장은 최근 증설을 마쳐 지난달 초부터 시험운전 도중에 있으며 혼합가스를 공급하는 관로에 금이 가 사고가 난 것으로 보고 있다.

이 회사는 태양광 축전지 원료와 반도체 중간물질인 폴리실리콘을 생산하는 업체로 최근 2공장을 증설했다.

소방당국과 회사 측 등은 정확한 사고원인 등을 조사하고 있다.
