Daegu suffers 8th student suicide in 6 months over alleged school violence

A high-school student was found dead over the weekend in front of his apartment building here in an apparent suicide, police said Monday, in what would be the eighth such case in six months in the city of Daegu over school violence.

A security guard found the 16-year-old student's body on Saturday evening in front of the apartment building and reported it to police. Police have not found a suicide note but they suspect the student jumped to his death.

Shortly before the apparent suicide, the student, whose name was withheld, wrote that he might take his own life in a KaKaoTalk message, a popular mobile-phone message service in South Korea.

Also, the student left a message hinting at committing suicide on his computer, according to police.

According to the police investigation, the student suffered an injury to his eardrum in January after being beaten by his seniors.

They were members of a football club.

In December, a middle-school student in the southeastern city of Daegu leapt to his death over school bullying, sparking nationwide public concern.

Since then, six other teenage students from Daegu have died in apparent suicides despite the government's large-scale campaign to crack down on school violence and bullying. (Yonhap News)

대구에서 또 고교생이 스스로 목숨을 끊은 사건 이 발생했다.

지난해 12월 중학교 2학년 A(당시 14세)군이 자신의 아파트에서 뛰어내려 숨진 뒤 대구에서만 6개월 사이에 자살한 중ㆍ고교생은 8명으로 늘었다.

지난 2일 오후 7시 5분께 대구시 수성구 H아파트 화단에 모 고등학교 1학년 K(1 6)군이 쓰러져 숨져 있는 것을 이 아파트 경비원 정모(70)씨가 발견, 경찰에 신고했다.

경찰은 아파트에 설치된 CCTV를 확인한 결과 K군이 혼자 승강기를 타고 아파트 15층에서 내린 것을 확인했다.

사고 현장에서는 유서나 휴대전화 등 신원을 알 수 있는 유품은 전혀 발견되지 않은 것으로 알려졌다.

그러나 K군은 숨지기 직전 카카오톡으로 자신이 가입해 있는 축구클럽 회원에게 '목숨을 끊을지도 모른다'는 사실을 알린 것으로 전해졌다.

또 K군이 자신의 컴퓨터에 "죽고 싶다"는 등 일기 형식의 글을 남긴 점 등으로 미뤄 스스로 목숨을 끊은 것으로 경찰은 추정하고 있다.

경찰 조사에서 K군의 유가족은 "지난 1월 K군이 같은 중학교를 졸업한 선후배들로 구성된 축구동아리에서 구타를 당해 고막을 크게 다쳐 가해 학생 부모들과 합의를 한 적이 있다"며 "당시 괴로운 심정을 적은 쪽지가 발견되기도 했다"고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.

K군은 학교 성적이 우수하고 축구를 좋아해 축구클럽에서 활동했다고 한다.

경찰은 유가족과 친구, 학교 관계자 등을 상대로 K군의 숨진 경위를 파악하는 한편, K군이 학교 폭력에 시달려는 지에 대해서도 집중 조사하고 있다.
