The Canadian Embassy has joined in Seoul City’s green roof initiative at its building in Jeong-dong.

The rooftop is the result of a joint partnership and co-funding between the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Government of Canada.

It is the first time that a foreign mission in Korea has partnered with Seoul City on a green roof initiative.

Ambassador David Chatterson and Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon celebrated the opening at the Canadian Embassy on May 25.

Canadian Ambassador David Chatterson said: “The Embassy of Canada is very proud to be the first foreign mission to partner with Seoul City on the Green Rooftop Support Program. Through partnership in this green roof project, Canada and the City have the opportunity to showcase our respective governments’ green commitments.”

The Embassy’s Green Rooftop uses a tray system to grow vegetation ― providing good conditions and low maintenance costs.

The rooftop garden includes sedums and spindle trees to help reduce summer temperatures and provide a resting spot for migratory birds, reduce excessive rain runoff and improve the air quality and aesthetics of Seoul.
