The honorary chairman of Shinsegae Group, Chung Jae-eun, has been named this year’s winner of the prestigious Samuel Johnson Medal from Columbia University in the United States.

The Samuel Johnson Medal recognizes distinguished alumni outside the fields of engineering or applied science, and was established in 2005. It is named after the university’s first president, Samuel Johnson.

Chung is the first Korean, as well as the first alumnus based outside the U.S., to receive the award. Company officials said that he was recognized for his visionary leadership of Samsung as well as the Shinsegae Group.

Past recipients include Yale professor Ira M. Millstein and Vikram S. Pandit, CEO of Citigroup Inc. They won the medal in 2007 and 2011, respectively.
