Hard-working teen jailed as truant

An employer says a 17-year-old girl Texas girl who spent a night in jail for truancy does nothing but work and go to school.

Diane Tran, an 11th-grader, was jailed for 24 hours May 23 after a judge found she had disobeyed an order not to miss any more school, KHOU-TV, Houston, reported. Under Texas law, students can only have 10 unexplained absences in a year.

Mary Elliot, who runs the wedding planning service where Tran works on weekends, thinks that is unfair. She said Tran, an honor student at Willis High School in the Houston area, sometimes oversleeps because of the pressure of holding two jobs, including a full-time one at a dry cleaner.

"I can understand if a child is staying out of school, running around, a bad kid, getting into trouble, taking drugs," Elliot told ABC News. "I can understand why he would slap them into jail for 24 hours. But Diane doesn't do that. All she does is work and go to school."

Judge Lanny Moriarty told KHOU he needed to set an example.

"If you let one run loose, what are you going to do with the rest of them?" he said. "Let them go, too?" (UPI)

'결석했다고...' 여고생 24시간 감옥신세

미국 텍사스주의 한 고등학생이 학교를 결석했다는 이유로 감옥에 구금됐다.

다이앤 트랜(17)은 지난 23일 수업에 빠지지 말고 참여하라는 판사의 명령을 불복한 혐의로 24시간 동안 감옥신세를 져야 했다.

텍사스시는 법적으로 학생이 한 해에 특별한 사유 없이 결석할 수 있는 날을 10일 이하로 규정하고 있다.

윌리스 고등학교의 우등생인 트랜은 학업 이외에 두 가지의 일을 병행하는 것이 버거워 아침에 일어나지 못해 학교를 결석하게 되었다고 말했다.

트랜은 평일에는 세탁소에서 풀타임으로 일하고 주말에는 웨딩 플랜 업체에서 일을 하고 있다.

트랜이 일하는 웨딩 플랜 업체 사장인 메리 앨리엇은 이 판결이 공평하지 않다며 “만약 불량 청소년처럼 학교를 벗어나 마약을 하는 등 물의를 일으킨 아이라면 24시간 동안 감옥에 보내는 판결을 이해하겠다. 하지만 다이앤은 그렇지 않다. 그 아이가 하는 일은 오직 일하고 학교에 가는 것뿐이었다.”라고 말했다.

이에 해당 판사는 “한 사람에게 느슨한 판결을 내린다면 나머지에겐 어떻게 해야 할까요? 모든 이들을 그렇게 하도록 둘까요?”라고 반박했다.
