US soldier sentenced to 6 years for rape in SKorea

A Seoul court has sentenced an American soldier to six years in prison for raping a teenage South Korean girl last year.

The Seoul Central District Court’s sentencing of Pvt. Kevin Robinson on Wednesday follows the sentencing in November of another U.S. private to 10 years in prison for a similar crime.

The two cases rekindled anti-American sentiments in South Korea and prompted U.S. officials to apologize. The United States has 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea as a deterrent against North Korea.

U.S. Forces Korea says it’s checking whether Robinson intends to appeal.

The court also ordered the soldier’s personal information be disclosed on a South Korean government website for 10 years. It cited the victim’s age as a reason to warn the public. (AP)

서울중앙지법 형사27부는 서울 마포의 한 고시원에서 여고생을 성폭행하고 금품을 훔쳐 달아난 혐의로 기소된 주한미군 케빈 로빈슨 일병(21)에게 징역 6년에 정보공개 10년을 선고했다고 지난 수요일 밝혔다.

재판부는 “로빈슨이 혐의를 모두 부인하고 있지만, 피해자 A양의 속옷에서 로빈슨의 정액 반응이 나온 상황 등을 종합하면 로빈슨의 범죄사실을 인정할 수밖에 없다”고 밝혔다. 또 “로빈슨이 폭력을 행사한 것은 아니지만, 만취한 상태라는 점을 이용해 당시 미성년자이던 피해자를 강간한 것으로 보인다”며 “피해자가 미성년이었던 만큼 정보공개도 함께 명한다”며 양형 이유를 설명했다.

로빈슨은 지난해 10월17일 오전 서울 마포구의 한 고시원에 들어가 자고 있던 여고생 A양을 성폭행하고, A양의 노트북을 훔쳐 달아난 혐의로 기소됐다. 조사 결과, 그는 A양 등과 함께 클럽에서 술을 마시다 만취한 A양을 숙소에 데려다 준 후 다시 A양의 고시원에 돌아가 범행을 저지른 것으로 드러났다.
